The Clay Busy Bees 4 H club met July 18 at the Onslow Community room with Ber cius Bickford as hostess. Alice Larkey presided. seven members two mothers two guests and one leader attended. Plans were made to entertain Farm Bureau on Aug 1 and for the local achievement show. Each member brought a table setting and discussed the right and wrong points.
Cass Corner Chums met July 15 at the Farm Bureau building Ana mosa. They planned the August Achievement Show and heard talks on breeds and customs from other countries by Melda Oltman. Ann Porter presented Ways of Getting Milk in Our Diets and Shirley Prize spoke on Table Etiquette. Janice Kula and Betty Humpal demonstrated Mixing and Baking Cookies, Arlene Oltman demonstrated Making a Pie Crust. Sharon Mayberry led the music and 4-H records discussion. Hostesses Arlene and Melda Oltman provided refreshments and led recreation.
Dubuque County officials announced fairgrounds improvements ahead of the Dubuque County Fair to be held August 16 17 and 18. A new 500 foot water well is completed to supply fresh water and fairground roads are being upgraded.
All rest room facilities are completed and almost all exhibitor space is allotted with booths scarce. Onslow teachers Miss Mate Harms and Mrs. Ray Heideman joined a two week reading workshop that began Monday at Coe College in Cedar Rapids. Also noted was a prenuptial shower for Miss Karen Kay Wiese, daughter of Mrs. Viola Wiese, with marriage to Lonnie Ripperton planned for August 12 at the Lutheran church in Lost Nation.
Members of the Onslow Presbyterian caroler choir with sponsors Mrs. Walter Wagner and Mrs. Earl Mayberry toured places of interest in Cedar Rapids on Thursday July 21.
The Five Hundred club met Tuesday afternoon at the Lloyd Preston home in Maquoketa. A 1:30 p.m. dessert luncheon preceded card play at three tables with visiting players Mrs. Edna Hamilton Mrs. Erma Bramer and Mrs. Guyer.
At the regular meeting on Monday evening a dessert luncheon was served and prizes were won by Mrs. Anna Haltz Mrs. Mary Juilfs and Mrs. Frieda Martens.
Lei and Hodoval pitched for Scotch Grove to beat the Anamosa Midgets 6 to 2. The victory marked the team’s fourth consecutive win this season.
Miss Emma Jensen of Chicago and Miss Alvena Paulsen of Monticello were Friday supper guests in the Harry Paulsen home. Harold Overholt and his son Jimmie of Clinton, with Mrs. Alice Overholt, were Sunday visitors in the Howard Green home and called on Mrs. Patterson in Cascade.
Mrs Elva Hall and Dillon visited in the Russell Hall home Cedar Rapids Tuesday. Daryl Jansen and wife drove to Chicago for an overnight stay after sending cattle to market. Grandparents Mr and Mrs John Jansen hosted visiting children. Jerilyn Jansen vacationed in Cedar Rapids with Aunt Mrs George Davis. Elmer Manson of Manchester and Mr Mrs Robert Coggins hosted on Sunday. George Paulsen and Elmer Hinrichs were in Chicago with cattle. Jay Tomlinson and wife traveled to Cedar Rapids on business. E Horton notes grandson Glen Ladehoff suffered a crane accident resulting in a broken foot and cast. Floyd Horton threshing north of town as harvesting progresses. Much oats down. rain needed.
A two year old boy, Douglas Kirkholm, died after being run over by a tractor at the Kirkholm farm near Moville. The father, backing the machine, did not see the child in the yard.
