A large audience attended Good Friday services at the Monticello community building with Bishop Charles W. Barshares delivering the sermon. Easter music included a Cornell violinist and Monticello school and church choirs shaped a memorable program.
A Monticello committee plans a town wide clothing drive to ship at least five pounds per package to destitute people overseas. Residents are urged to raid closets and attics for old garments to be sorted and packed for shipment to the basement of the post office, with Postmaster Mark F. Hogan providing space. Church groups will participate in gathering clothing to aid war torn regions.
A discussion of W H Hudson’s Green Mansions and its new illustrated edition distributed by the Book of the Month Club. Biographical notes on Hudson cover Argentina birth in 1841 and his rise to recognition, with mentions of Galsworthy and classic literary reception.

Luther college freshmen attending a campus banquet were stranded at a Decorah hotel when floodwaters blocked the last road to campus. An Iowa Highway Commission truck ferried them home amid police traffic restrictions and guidance by telephone posts.
At Friday assembly the speech group presented two one act plays directed by Mrs. Bess Greenley. The Eldest centered on the kind unselfish Rose with a full cast including Naomi Hanken Flossie Edna Kray and others. The Nine Lives of Emily traced Emily Reade’s maneuvers to catch a beau with a large cast and crews. Paul Seehusen presented a carnation corsage to Mrs. Greenley. The Eldest was shown to Rotary Club Monday evening.
On Monday March 26 the Monti cello Chapter of the FFA received their seed germinator and planned quick setup. At the Young Farmers gathering Mr McTavish secretary treasurer of the National Farm Loan Association Cedar Rapids spoke. FFA president Dave Walker recovered from two weeks illness and returned to school. A student fractured a leg after a cigarette butt was tossed into a man hole.
University High took first with 4614 points at the Town field house meet. West Branch was second with 26 points and Monticello third with 18% points. LaVern Rickers Bill Corbin Dick Bonwell and Don Newton ran the half mile relay in 1 42.8 to win the trophy.
The Monti High School announces its safety patrol with Ann and Shirley Skelley as chairs. Lieutenant patrolmen named include Jim Robinson Don Skelley Don Robinson Marvin Boysen Raymond Rienichs Rex Martinsen Bob Lubben and Raymond Null.

Mrs. Bess Greenley announces Smilin Through as the senior class play for the 1945 commencement activities. Tryouts are set for Monday April 16 with all crew urged to attend.
Triem sponsored a sale of war bonds helping Monti High students purchase two Jeeps. Officials hope sales gains pick up after a slow few weeks and urge collective effort to roll out the third Jeep.
The state music contest for Class AA to D will be held at Monti High on April 6 with over 550 students. Participating schools include Dubuque Maquoketa Marion Monticello Mount Vernon Olin Springville Bellevue Earlville Martello Wyoming and local Monti High entries. Judges are Ansel Martin Iowa City for piano and vocal solos and Henry Wenger Owatonna Minnesota for instrumental solos and groups. Sixty instrumental solos and eleven Monti High groups contest across brass woodwind and drum ensembles with vocal groups and solos among the entries.
