Monticello minutes show two births reported at John McDonald hospital for Marsh 29 with families in Anamosa and Monticello. The week lists daily events from April 2 to 8 including meetings, recruiter's visits, and a March car incident roundup with multiple names and vehicle brands.
March 28 Eugene Arthur Engel king and Loretta Noriie Crooks both of Olin of legal age. March 30 John G. Newlin of Viola aged 31 and Blanche Peterson of Austin aged 33.
A coroner's jury found Eldon W. Breitbach 28 Monticello died March 4 on highway 151 near Monticello in a drag race with Cecil Coppes 31 Yar mouth. Breitbach's car struck a bridge abutment and burst into flames. Coppes’s car was damaged but Coppes was not hospitalized. The verdict noted no felonious death and that further investigation into possible charges would follow.
In Jones County district court last week three Monticello men William Walter Simmons Donald Eugene Harms and Robert De Wald faced charges of offering beer to a minor but were dismissed on state motion as companion cases had been disposed of Each man was sentenced on lascivious acts with a child Simmons four month suspended Harms six months in jail and DeWald a three year reformatory term with a bench parole Also noted were related cases including Byron George Hoffman driving while license suspended and Gerd L Weers fined 300 with 60 day license suspension The April district term begins with Judge J E Heiserman presiding Grand jurors and schedule announced continuous court activities and juror assignments
Jones county farmers receive 88300 in A S C funds for soil conservation this year. The package combines 78300 original soil building funds with a 10000 supplement to expand permanent practices. Hayden notes rising demand may trigger another 10000 state allocation. Funds support limestoning sod waterways dams pasture improvements and tiling.
George H. Harms of Monticello and Thomas Stimpson of Anamosa filed for the Democratic nominations for Jones county clerk of court and state representative respectively. Harms, 43, a farmer and longtime party member, seeks the clerkship held by Republican W. Leigh Pearson. Stimpson, longtime gun shop operator, seeks the state representative seat now held by Republican Russell E. Eldred. No Democrats had yet filed for other county offices and no Republicans for county coroner as of the latest report.
The Monticello board of education approved average teacher raises around 200 with new contracts offered to most staff. resignations by Cabalka Shugart Youtzy noted. A one coach athletic department plan was approved replacing multiple coaches with a head coach and three assistants.
A three mile stretch of trunk road A west of Monticello is the most traveled road in Jones county with an annual 24 hour traffic average of 395.5 between Monticello and Stony Point bridge. The count from Anamosa west to Stone City runs 332 vehicles daily. Road counts were gathered by five men from 8 am to 4 pm counting intersections for the Iowa State Highway Commission.
Dr. Donald Kyer a Dubuque psychiatrist and former superintendent of the State Mental Health Institute at Independence will speak Friday April 6 at 8 p.m. in Sacred Heart school gymnasium under the Sacred Heart Home School association sponsorship. Ernie Becker association president invites the public to attend.
Jones County has spent about 2.06 million dollars over 11 years on roads including grading surfacing farm-to-market work bridge repair and culverts. The 1957 three year plan will target roughly 200000 annually for secondary roads with funding also from private assessments state farm-to-market funds and county sources.
