The price of ice has risen 50 percent as the local ice man was forced to pass factory costs to consumers. A new ice plant could profit from abundant water at 60 feet depth, simple upkeep, and nearby shipping to surrounding towns.
Signers of the J. E. Johnston gravel road petition received letters demanding 7.00 to cover election expenses. Promoters had promised to cover costs if the petition failed, but now the signers face the charges.
The Montezuma Mill and Elevator Company reported a good harvest on the 4th of July with over 1200 bushels of new crop wheat from Henry Vestal neighborhood. The grain tested 60 pounds to the bushel and fields show a yield of twenty bushels per acre with uniform quality. Josie McKeown at Pave spat Sunday with her parents here.
The pension department reports living Civil War veterans on the pension roll and their ages. Among those under eighteen at enlistment, 34 438 are currently on pension. The distribution includes 137 277 aged 66 69, 518 aged 90 99, and one at 103, plus 2 631 with $30 disability claims. about four in five living veterans are 65–75, and nine percent are under 65.
Harry Machiedt sold his interest in Machiedt & Huxford to Ivan Huxford, making the firm Huxford & Huxford Furniture and Undertaking. The cousins are young, with Ivan learning the trade. Machiedt plans a brief rest and will decide future plans.
The swimming pool management has secured the Italian Band 0% Clinton for Sunday July 20. A strong band will provide fine entertainment with other features to enliven the day. Attendees can enjoy shade seats and refreshments in the amphitheater.
Newport Motor Club members met last Thursday to approve another two day hill climb event this season. One day will be for amateurs. Dates are not yet finalized.

Emma Baird visits from Danville Illinois and contemplates Chicago relocation. Sieng and friends fish from Humes and visit Brockway club picnic. Funeral of Ernest Kaufman at Libertyville with Aikman relatives present. Various locals travel to Indianapolis Springfield Danville and Danville Illinois.
