A gasoline lighting plant leaked at the H S Cornwell store causing a blaze that scorched hands of Bert and Harry Kohr. Neighbors smothered the fire with flour sticks while Mr. Cornwell arrived to help. The incident highlights the need for a town water system to prevent a block-wide loss.
The W W A held a Monday night banquet with about seventy five attendees including members from other points. Oysters pickles and pie were served. Ed Ireland of Bloomingdale won the oyster eating challenge claiming the best way to enjoy oysters is barefooted.
A Bloomingdale group led by Bruce White attacked at the Scott bar with a knife. They fled into the Wabash grasses, were located by Marshall Wheeler who ordered them out with a show of force. Bruce White was arrested and fined 35 dollars 60 cents.
Rooster Mathas and Dingy Wagoner win the Montezuma title after defeating Thomas and Scott in a best of three series. The Rooster earns the crown while Dingy Young proclaims their ascent to top champions.
Roy Aikman and Gerney Green investigated a missing pen of hogs at Aikman’s slaughter house. A peg legged man sold dressed meat at eight cents a pound, arousing suspicions. Frank Sloan was arrested on suspicion after admitting meat sales from the place last Saturday and faced a $100 bond as the case moved to court. Local petty theft concerns are rising and calls for stronger action.
Regular annual installation of officers held last Friday with R W Sutton as Worshipful Master C S Overman senior warden and other officers named. A large turnout attended the ceremony followed by a banquet in honor of the new officers and music by Sutton using his Amberola.
Fred Hendrick of Vermillion county returns home after assisting at the Indianapolis Speedway for King Bros. He spent the winter with his teams and equipment after helping start the new addition and putting in steady time.
Mrs C H Schaefer entertained last Thursday for her sister Mrs A H Mooney of Chicago. Guests included Mr and Mrs Marion Mathas Mr and Mrs Robert Sutton Mr Harry Reeder and Miss Verna Stoner of Greencastle.Refreshments were served and games enjoyed as the evening ended with all departing at a late hour.
The note recalls the Montezuma Local News history from its start as editor and editor in chief fifteen years ago. It traces sales to Arrowsmith of Newport then Gillispie and Akers, John Jordan, and Arthur Powell, ending with consolidation into the Record and loss of the News identity. Powell suspended publication about three years ago. Last July the plant was bought again and launched as the ENTERPRISE, seeking citizens’ approval and support.
In this first issue of 1913 the paper urges advertisers to keep ads current and seasonally focused. It offers help in ad design, advises featuring stock in local columns, and stresses matching goods to public demand to boost profits.
Frank Pressler began moving into a new auto sales room this week and plans a clear focus on selling cars. He will offer auto supplies and oils but aims to attract buyers with a price range to suit every purse and already has several sales lined up before spring.
O B Price gave his granddaughters Miss Grace McLaughlin and Miss Lela McLaughlin a new Ford five passenger touring car as a Christmas present. The girls will surely enjoy splendid trips in their new machine.
