Frank Sloan, arrested by Roy Aijksman on suspicion of killing a hog from the slaughterhouse, pleaded not guilty. He was arraigned in county court last week, tried by a jury and sentenced to the penitentiary for one to eight years.
Saturday evening Mrs. B. A. Machin slipped on ice while going into coal yard and fell injuring her right arm above the wrist. Her husband Uncle Win Cheesewright has been housebound all winter, leaving two to be cared for by others.
Parke and Vermillion counties failed to secure a divorce of their courts and will remain under one judge and prosecutor. A bill to create two separate judicial districts was killed in the Senate committee on courts. The call to action urged lawmakers to act promptly.
Parke county commissioners approve a reinforced concrete bridge at Armiesburg replacing the dangerous crossing. The two 75 foot spans cost under 10900 dollars and will be displayed in the First National Bank. Construction aims to improve safety and align the bridge with the road.
A brief hair pulling contest among young women last week ended with the crowd lively. The confrontation reached its climax before Esq. Houchin last Friday when the new prosecuting attorney met Montezuma. The offender paid 17 dollars plus trimmings, with pants on or off.
The Town Board met on Thursday night February 6 and debated a grade crossing walkway and a new town hall. All members favor the improvements and plan to proceed as soon as spring weather allows.
The Montezuma Independent basketball team lost a tight game in Clinton last Friday night as a 12 to 12 tie led to a five minute extension. Clinton scored on fouls to win, making it a hotly contested affair. The Independents have few defeats this season.
