J C Barrett of Hume Jr falls from scaffolding at a C H D washout Friday evening. 31 years old, left a wife and two children. Body found after night search in 16 feet of water near the last sighting by Ray and Ed Borrin.
John Doan suffered a serious accident Saturday morning when a wagon seat spring collapsed as he started to move. He fell onto his left shoulder and arm, breaking a bone above the wrist and dislocating another. Dr. Reeder treated with setting and splinting, and Doan is recovering as well as could be expected.
Service on the C H and D road resumed Wednesday morning after the gap to Hillsdale was bridged Tuesday night. It has been ten days since a train creased and mail was moved by dray. The C and E I line works on the Clinton bridge from one end and plans a temporary span to restore through traffic within a week or ten days.
W. P. Montgomery bought a Model 24 Buick rural tourer and intends to explore rough terrain and high places during outings. He plans adventurous drives and scenic routes, testing the car’s capabilities on hills and country roads.
Mrs. Robert A. McCord, 82, longtime Rockville resident and Presbyterian, died Saturday night after a period of heart illness. Survived by husband and two sons Samuel of Logansport and William of Montezuma. Funeral held at 2:30 on Monday at the residence with Rev. William B. Chancellor officiating. burial in Rockville Cemetery.
Coroner T J Collings of Mecca held an inquest into the death of John Dulin who moved from Tuscola Illinois to near Rockville four weeks earlier. He died after a wagon accident with a bruised head while driving. death attributed to heart failure. Survived by wife and daughter. remains sent to Newman Illinois for burial.
The M. E. Church schedules Sunday services at 10 45 a m and 7 p m with Sunday School at 9 30 a m. The Junior League meets Thursday at 4 p m and a mid week devotional gathering is set for 7 p m.
County commissioners report storm and flood damage totaling between 15 000 and 25 000 dollars. Coxs Ford bridge over Sugar Creek was completely lost and bids will be requested at once to replace the structure after the river rose about 2 feet.
Arbor Day will be observed by public schools following a 38th Friday of April rule enacted by the legislature. The law leaves planting and care guidance to teachers, aiming to beautify campuses and foster forestry among pupils, teachers and parents.
The Boy Scouts will try a Friday after school hike if conditions are favorable. So far weather has been unfavorable for such work. All boys expected to participate in summer outings or camp life should attend if possible, meeting at the hall soon after school.
After flood waters receded the grade from the wagon bridge to the C. and HE tracks shows less damage than feared. Estimates put washed away fill at one fifth to one fourth. arch damage is slight and with a week’s work traffic can resume if overhead bridge is repaired. Wm Carty has the washout on the approach nearly ready for use.
Last Wednesday the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Moore died. Burial followed Thursday at Bloomingdale cemetery. Friday morning Louise Leonard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Abner Leonard, died after a long illness. Interment was held Saturday at Oakland cemetery.
Roland Bently returned to Montezuma on Saturday after spending the winter at Culver. He will make his home here this summer.
