Baby's Partly Decomposed Body Found in Basin
In Hackensack New Jersey a partially decomposed baby boy was found in a four foot deep stone catch basin. Autopsy by Dr Arthur Greenfield could not determine death cause and police questioned smothering drowning or strangulation while examining clothing and the basin cover. The infant, about five days dead, stood 24 to 28 inches and weighed 25 to 30 pounds. A passerby eight year old Michae Genovese Jr reported finding the body while searching for lost balls.
Arizona girl Miss America 1949 winner heads to fame
Jacque Mercer of Litchfield Arizona, 18, was crowned Miss America 1949 in Atlantic City after defeating 52 finalists from 45 states and other regions. She receives a 5000 dollar scholarship and a 3000 dollar automobile and begins a nationwide appearance tour. Mercer, daughter of Mr and Mrs Arthur L Mercer, plans to attend Phoenix Junior College and Stanford University, studying dramatics and aiming for a career after marriage.

The body of Supreme Court Justice Wiley B. Rutledge is being sent to Washington by train after his death in York Missouri from a cerebral hemorrhage at 55. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. in Washington's Unitarian Church with court colleagues as honorary pallbearers. Rutledge, Roosevelt appointee since 1943, was mourned by President Truman and Justice Vinson as a great American and earnest jurist.

Man Hunter Nabbed in Five States Arrest in Monroe
Monroe police report the 45 year old New Iberia man Paul B. Norman alias William O Neal alias Justin B Glass was arrested Saturday night and held in Ouachita parish jail on auto theft and embezzlement charges. He faced warrants from Amarillo Texas San Diego and Chicago and was wanted for hot checks and swindling with bonds and terms in Indiana. Norman claimed to run a novelty warehouse and sold perfumes literature and other goods from a 1947 Cadillac. Police are contacting the American Banking Association for further charges.
