A British guarded rescue fleet reported all but a few killed after the explosion that sank the Donaldson liner Athenia off London. The event followed a party from Texas aboard the vessel, with numbers of Americans among the survivors and casualties.

He was born in Ruelzheim Germany and lived in Monroe since emigrating in 1958. He leaves his wife three sons Oskar of Havana Eugene and Victor of Monroe a sister and a brother in Germany and Sol Cahn of Monroe.
S. F. Sanders, 34, of Pine Bluff Arkansas, drowned early Monday while reportedly working on a pump out in Bayou Desiard behind the Three Mile Inn. The American Legion emergency truck found his body in eight feet of water at 7 40 a.m. after being summoned at 6 50 a.m. by Mrs. Jack Angell. Sanders had been sleeping in a room behind the inn when a cry alerted his wife and he tried to dive to the submerged body but could not locate it.
Herbert Morrison announced that nearly 600,000 children and mothers had been safely evacuated from London between September 1 and last midnight. The final evacuees and the blind were to be removed from London proper by 7 o'clock tonight.
Moscow reports begin of talks to settle the undeclared war on the Outer Mongolia Manchoukuo frontier. A Japanese envoy met Foreign Commissar Molotoff as Russia signals neutrality while Britain and France declare war on Germany.

United States ambassador Anthony J. Drexel Biddle Jr. said a German plane dropped six bombs on his villa and nearby homes near Warsaw. The attack damaged a villa and shattered windows but no one was hurt. incendiaries failed to explode. The villa had been leased for safety as war loomed.
