A multi city World War II dispatch reports German and Polish actions around Gdynia and Krakow. Polish air and ground efforts claim several German planes down and a captured armored train. Berlin cites German advances toward Poland while other cities note bombardments and border crossings.
President Roosevelt told reporters the United States could avoid involvement in the European conflict and would make every effort to remain neutral. He said he sincerely hopes and believes the nation can stay out, with the administration striving to do so, as Ambassador Hugh Wilson submitted his resignation to Germany.
Berlin reports Adolf Hitler orders army to meet force with force after Polish violations as Danzig is proclaimed reunified with Germany. German naval action targets Gdynia and Baltic neutral shipping while Poland faces maritime danger and Germany closes schools.
