Brownell Probes Little Rock School Integration Halt

President Eisenhower said Atty. Gen. Brownell is investigating the Little Rock situation after Gov. Faubus sent National Guardsmen to block integration. Sixteen hundred plus students faced a halted plan as nine Negroes were to attend Central High School but did not appear.

Eisenhower Belittles Russian ICBM Claims as Testing Distinct from Production

President Eisenhower said that Russia's announced ICBM test does not prove production and stressed that much more time and money are needed. He called the Soviet report evasive and warned against placing credence in it, noting U.S. missile efforts remain a high priority but will take years to reach a deliverable capability. He also indicated modest federal savings and warned inflation as a major internal problem while promoting conservative governance and limited peacetime controls.

Three Day Labor Day Toll In Louisiana Traffic Drownings

A United Press survey shows at least 13 people died during the Labor Day weekend in Louisiana. Six died in highway crashes, five drowned, and two children perished in home accidents. Notable victims include Robert Gunnie 21 of Baton Rouge who slipped into a hole in the Amite river.

Hospitalized Cascio Attacked By Bobcat Near Car

Joe Cascio, 39, of 205 South Fifth Street, was found near his automobile in La Fourche swamp after a wild night when a bobcat attacked him during dove season opening. He was hospitalized for deep scratches after roaming the swamp with companion Thomas Cappo.

Labor Day Traffic Deaths Top 420 In Nationwide Toll

The Labor Day weekend traffic toll rose beyond 420 with final reports showing 429 deaths plus 92 drownings and 83 other accidents for a 604 total. Ned H. Dearborn of the National Safety Council cited deep disappointment as favorable weather drew more cars on the highways and California led states with 50 fatalities.

Mrs Lipp Dies in Oak Grove Leader in Louisiana Papers

Mrs Mabel Long Lipp a longtime Louisiana newspaperwoman died early today in an Oak Grove hospital after a prolonged illness. Widow of Leopold Lipp he published the West Carroll Gazette until 1929. She co-published the Oak Grove paper and held posts at Franklin Sun Publishing Co in Winnsboro. She was active in the Eastern Star and Masonic circles.

Fire Destroys Monroe Water Pumping Station

A lightning caused blaze at the Bayou DeSiard pumping station in Monroe destroyed the top deck and damaged pumps. Emergency crews activated Ouachita River pumps and hoped to restore at least two primary pumps by late afternoon while assuring residents the water remains pure despite a slight taste.

Jamaica Train Disaster Leaves Hundreds Dead

Heavy rainfall hampered search as nearly 200 Jamaicans were feared dead after a 12 coach excursion train derailed near Kendal, Jamaica. About 1,500 Catholics returning from Montego Bay were aboard. 176 died, possibly rising to 200. Injuries mounted with 700 hospital cases and 500 in care, many youths among the dead.

Gulf States Alerted Hunter of Missing Wife After Cocktail Party

William Clark told police a Florida salesman Raymond Meyers drove off with his wife after a party. Meyers and Mrs. Clark were last seen at 9 p.m. Sunday. Clark described Meyers as 6-3 and 245 pounds. The car left, ran over Clark’s foot, and authorities were alerted along Gulf Coast states.
