Second Lieutenant Charles H Pinky Moore, missing since August 18, has returned to his post. His wife Mrs Iva Lee Sanders Moore was notified by telegram from the War Department stating he is back on duty. He is the son of Charlie B Moore of Mooringsport and was a bomber co pilot on a mission when he was reported missing.
A New Orleans detective fatally shot William Stevens after Stevens resisted custody following a string of alleged assaults on young girls. The incident occurred as Stevens tried to flee during transfer to headquarters, with Coast Guard Lt Cmdr John Vogt firing seven shots earlier at the show-up room, wounding one officer.
In Central City Nebraska on September 4, the two infant children of Mr and Mrs Vaidine Mary were burned to death as a fire swept the Marr home. Ronald Eugene aged 2 and Gerald Joe aged 4 months perished trapped in a bedroom while an expectant mother Mrs Marr prepared care for them. Fire Chief Haddix said a third child Valdine Jr aged 4 started the blaze while playing with matches.
United States Pacific fleet claims to challenge Japan by striking Marcus Island in a carrier task force raid planned for September 1 Japan time. Washington and Tokyo announced the operation saying planes and ships attacked the Marcus Island outpost, with radio silence likely until the raid concludes.
Police questioned Robert Wolfington, 23, a Claypool hotel bellboy, about the slaying of Maema L. Ridings in a hotel. Wolfington, held on $5,000 bond for vagrancy, had previously claimed delivering ice to Ridings' room where her body was found. He is separated from his wife of Greencastle with a one year old child. Wolfington reportedly discharged from the navy last fall. Meanwhile an Alexandria bomber crash near Harrisonburg, two bodies found, planes accounted for.
London reports a second massive raid on Berlin in eight days as Great Britain and Canadian aircraft bomb the Nazi capital with heavy bombs and incendiaries. Forty-seven bombers and one fighter were lost, with defense by German fighters and searchlights.
Dr W H Miller assistant state superintendent of education resigns accusing Superintendent John F Coxe of using politics to govern the department. Miller cites mismanagement and says professional matters should come to him but are delegated to Coxe and Rex Beard.
