A car wreck four miles south of Clarksdale Mississippi today killed three people including two army officers and injured three others one possibly fatally The dead are First Lieutenant George F Carey and Second Lieutenant R Krieg both student officers at Fletcherfield and Dorothy Halbert of Clarksdale Louise Hunsucker 20 Clarksdale is described as probably fatally injured The injured include Lieutenant R E McKown of Fletcherfield and Virginia Rochelle of Rolling Fork

New Orleans Sept. 2 District Attorney J Bernard Cocke announced he would seek a grand jury investigation into the killing of Willie Steves 36 a confessed child attacker by Detective Joseph Vigurre. Steves was shot while being transported after identification in rape cases. An attempt on his life occurred earlier in the police show up room by Coast Guard Lt Commander John P Vogt whose daughter identified Steves. Cocke said the grand jury will review the circumstances when it meets next Tuesday.
New York Sept 2 The Wall Street Journal reports state governments are rapidly climbing out of debt while the federal government deepens by 69 billion dollars this year. The survey covers 35 states and many governors say their finances are the strongest in history.
Moscow reports eight Nazi divisions totaling 120,000 men routed around the Donets as Red Army drives toward Stalino Poltava Bryansk and Smolensk. New advances also listed near Smolensk and Brynek fronts with heavy enemy reserves being drawn south. The blitz continues with significant casualties and captures of German troops.
