Socialist demonstrators clashed with military forces in Budapest during a Labor Day parade. Three rioters were killed and more than 100 injured as work stopped in major factories amid a government ban. About 70 000 to 80 000 demonstrators marched through the main streets.
More than 60 spectators were prostrated by the heat during the Labor Day parade on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington with temperatures near 92 degrees. Ambulances ferried victims to hospitals as aisles filled with beds.
Shouting Down with the government the demonstrators demanded bread and work. Police and troops were mobilized Sunday in secret preparations for the protests. When crowds gathered police intervened with mounted troops charging and foot officers aiding the effort.
The weather bureau issued advisory at 10 a.m. noting a tropical disturbance of unknown intensity east of Martinique moving west-northwestward. Further advisories were promised tonight.
