In Farmington Maine Fred Wheeler cattleman and father of four is charged with slaying a secretarial student Florence Buz ol whose death near Chesterville last June was ruled a shooting. Wheeler was arrested in Boston on a murder warrant after a three state search, with police stating jealousy over a rival suitor. Richardson said the trio were moved in secrecy with a guarded arrival to the vehicle and entered the car on hands and knees.
Hundreds of army trucks carry the 165th Mississippi and 156th Louisiana regiments from the 31st division from Camp Blanding to the Carolina maneuver area. The units are in more than 1 000 vehicles and will be ready for the first phase starting November 4.
Roosevelt signs grants totaling 121,506.06 to Vernon Rapides and Grant parishes for relief of congested schools. New York Oct 23 A hotel guest was shot twice while watching a gunfight between a detective and a murder suspect who later killed himself. In a nine floor chase at Hotel Abbey two detectives entered a room where one man fled up a fire escape and exchanged shots. On the 23rd floor at Hotel Victoria composer William Ortmann 52 was struck by stray bullets while rushing to a window. he was hospitalized in serious condition. The suspect Abe Beitler 23, found unconscious under a banquet table with a temple wound, died later from his injuries.
World Today reports German forces within 10 miles of Rostov on Don as a gateway to Caspian oil reserves and near 38 miles from Moscow. London sources say capture could trigger British Middle East reinforcements, while Berlin denounces Roosevelt. Japan hopes for US understanding as 10,500 youths are called for defense mechanic training.
In Clanton Alabama on October 2 194? the fiery bus crash near a concrete bridge railing claimed 17 lives. Private Otis Lunsford aged 28 died at Maxwell Field Hospital Montgomery from burns.

Federal court heard William Bioff testify he acted as a messenger boy for the film industry and helped raise as much as a million dollars. He and George Browne face charges of extorting 550000 from producers through strike threats. Bioff said payments totaled over 800000, possibly 1 million, but denied they were tribute to him or Browne. He claimed the work was a favor for the Schenck brothers and Nicholas Schenck.
A White House luncheon honored the Duke and Duchess of Windsor with a guest list of about a dozen. Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt could not attend as hostess due to an 11:40 a.m. flight to Chicago for a prior engagement.
