They eloped from Fort Wayne and were watched by A L Wertman and wife with a nurse present. The craft tipped in a plowed field. Smith sprained ankle and Cour cut above eye with back wrenched.
Indianapolis Oct 28 A conference between Otis McManigal the self conf Madison dynamiter and Frank M Ryan president of the International Association of Structural Iron Workers was described as a dynamite conspiracy by McNamara s stenographer He said Ryan knew of a 1000 monthly payment to McNamara and Henry Legleitner of Pittsburg a Union executive board member testified He came to McNamara s office in response to a telegram to return carrying a specially constructed nitroglycerine suitcase.
In Greenville on October 27, Jeff Gilreath inspector of police and ex sheriff along with A A Phillips and Reuben Gosnell were charged with aiding Rev Thurston A Vaughn in an escape last June. Bond was posted and the men released as Governor Cole Blease ordered warrants. Vaughn had confessed to assaulting young girls at the South Carolina Odd Fellows Home and was recaptured in Baltimore.
A report notes that martial law was not declared in Texas as authorities found it unnecessary to enlarge police power of the regular army.
