A major event closed yesterday after a big turnout, marking the organization’s strongest attendance to date. Officials hailed the financial health and inaugural milestones achieved during the gathering.
The fifth annual Monroe Fair ends with a second performance of the 101 Ranca Wild West Show. More than ten thousand visitors flocked to the grounds as streetcars set records. management led by H D Apgar and team reports a financial success with all attractions under one admission. The event featured aeroplane flights by Eugene Godet and Johnny Green, balloon ascension, aerial trapeze by the Flying Helberts, a top racing program, and vibrant exhibits across departments. Eugene Godet and partner George Zeigin thrilled about ten thousand spectators yesterday afternoon at the Monroe Fair. He performed ten minutes of figure eights and sharp maneuvers near the grand stand before sailing east to four thousand feet and returning for a spiral glide. The crowd cheered as Godet landed and was helped from his aeroplane.
Johnny Green ascended yesterday afternoon beside Godet and climbed high above the plantations in front of the grand stand. He reached an altitude of over four thousand feet before gliding back toward the park and city.
Lake Charles October 26 AP report says W P D Ellis a Union man and first defense witness testified that John Galloway fired the initial shot at the Grabow riot. Ellis says he stood near the milk office unarmed and fled in a wagon. D W McFatter Grabow postmaster and stockholder in Galloway Lumber Co testified last for the State corroborating earlier evidence on the riot’s start.
Clementine Bernabet known as the ax woman and follower of the Church of Sacrifice was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in the State penitentiary. She confessed nineteen murders all of them against black victims prompting fears of lynching if acquitted.
Former Governor W. W. Heard in an interview explains why he opposes joint resolution No. 203 authorizing the State Board of Liquidation to issue new bonds to retire or refund the state debt due January 1, 1914. He cites inclusion of meritless claims, a proposed sinking fund of 125000 annually, and shifting pledge from all state property to only segregated property, among other concerns.
The Baptist church held morning and evening services with Rev Mr Holcomb presenting sermons on the attempted flight of Jonah and Enock's walk with God. Tonight he preaches on Tickets to Hell at Excursion Rates with tomorrow’s schedule including Heaven at 8 o'clock and 11 o'clock sermons.
Armed bandits blocked the Midland Valley train at Stony Bluff, Oklahoma, placing ties on the track. When the train halted at 6 PM, several men with Winchesters appeared but fled. Passengers panicked and some women fainted as officials pursued the robbers toward Hell.
New York reports General Daniel F. Sickles, veteran and former ambassador, facing sale of personal effects. His estranged wife asks Sheriff Harburger to postpone the levy, promising to pay a new judgment by Bank of the Metropolis around November 10. Previous aid involved pawning her jewelry.
Former Indiana senator Beveridge testified to the Clapp investigating committee that during the 1904 Senate campaign he received 260000 dollars from George W. Perkins 25000 from Edward L McLean and 2500 from Gifford Pinchot. He said he returned Perkins funds after the election and produced letters from witnesses confirming the repayment. The witness denied any other Perkins contributions or financing of an Indianapolis newspaper.
President Madero urges that the fall of Diaz marks the collapse of the revolution in Mexico with calls for unity and a shift toward stability amid ongoing political upheaval.
A telegraph from Mexico City quotes President Madero predicting Mexico will see rapid peace after the Diaz Revolution collapses. He says failure of Diaz signals reactionary defeat and that only small bands remain to be subdued.
Sofia reports Bulgarians fire on Adrianople area setting part of the town alight. They claim capture of forts Maris Havars and Sutilar plus the outer railroad station and 1800 prisoners. No Turkish officers among prisoners at Kirk Kilisseh. Turks retreating along the front.
Constantinople reports strong Bulgarian columns bolstering lines before the city. The Turkish council of ministers met to consider possible intervention by the powers but decided not to act now. A Saloniki telegram says Greek troops have landed at Katerina on the Saloniki gulf.
Rev. Thurston Vaughn once head of the South Carolina Odd Fellows Home confessed to criminal assault of three girls and admitted mistreating two more. Court opened with no hint of confession, but lawyers agreed to it to save his life. jury found him guilty with capital punishment and the judge wept as the confession was read.
