Oriskany Fire Kills 43 in Tonkin Gulf Blast

An AP report from Saigon says the U S aircraft carrier Oriskany suffered a major fire off the North Vietnamese coast killing 43 crewmen and injuring 16. The blaze began in a flare locker on dawn’s early hours, spread across five decks, destroyed helicopters, damaged jets, and forced evacuation before being checked. The ship was bound for Subic Bay for repairs. An investigation into the blaze was opened, and Johnson had visited Cam Ranh Bay before the incident.

Johnson Makes Secret Viet Nam Visit to Cam Ranh Bay

U S Forces Rout Viet Cong in Two Hour Coastal Battle

U S air cavalrymen and planes routed a Viet Cong company 16 miles northeast of Phan Thiet, with 48 enemy killed and two captured while two U S helicopters were shot down. Another helicopter downed 35 miles northwest of Saigon, with no crew casualties. Total U S aircraft losses reached 218. In the Mekong Delta parade, 12 Viet Cong were killed as a large search and destroy operation freed 18 prisoners, including 13 South Vietnamese soldiers and five women. A Sales Management study shows Ouachita Parish households increasingly earn $4,000 or more. Incomes rose 14.3 percent over three years, outpacing national and regional gains, with 51.8 percent in the $4,000-plus bracket. 3,921 earn $7,000–$10,000, 9,292 in $4,000–$7,000, 5,997 in $2,500–$4,000.
