The second annual 1942 auto show, sponsored by the Monroe West Monroe Chamber of Commerce, will open October 2. Twelve dealers from the Monroe Auto Dealers' association will display four cars each across DeSiard street and the 100 block of North Second street, with traffic diverted for the event.
The United States freighter Lehigh, sunk 75 miles west of Freetown, was torpedoed without the submarine being sighted by the 44 aboard including 39 crew and four Spanish stowaways. Captain Vincent Atkins said the torpedo hit at 8 55 a m on Sunday, shattering the main topmast and injuring two, with four toes lost by a seaman. Lifeboats were launched minutes after the blast and the crew, aided by British vessels, drifted toward Freetown as the ship sank 34 minutes later after loading manganese for New York from Bilbao.
The Twin City Community Chest for 1941 1942 reached 24891 96 by Friday noon, with a $27500 goal still ahead. Campaign Director Walter W Keilogg reports ongoing efforts and anticipates full realization soon as 24 hour gifts are acknowledged from numerous individuals and local businesses including Monroe Steam Laundry and River Terminal Co.

Bedford Ind Oct 4 Neal Garland 70 years old proclaimed twenty seven children are enough as he held his day old son born to his fourth wife Emma. The eight and a half pound boy is Garland's seventh son, eight of the 27 children are with the present Mrs Garland. He added it never objected to more while he was employed but at three score and ten a work it is time to halt.
Brazil October 24 report says twenty persons drowned when the Amazon river steamer Amazonensa sank near Manacapuru on Wednesday. Rescue and salvage efforts were underway as authorities confirmed the casualty figure and continued searching the river area.
Secretary of the Navy Knox told munitions manufacturers the Far East situation is extremely strained and that Japan intends to continue expansion. He said a collision between the United States and Japan is virtually inevitable if paths for arming Russia continue, noting he had just hurried from a conference.
A French news report from Vichy states fifty hostages were executed in Bordeaux as part of a 100 lives-for-one reprisal for the assassination of a German officer. Earlier Nantes had seen fifty killed, with fifty more at Bordeaux still alive and awaiting fate. Delays were granted by Petain and Darlan, while Germans pursued the actual assassins.
