Nanking dispatches report 8000 killed since communist capture of Kian on October 6 in Kiangsi province. Burning and looting followed the massacre. Five foreign Catholic sisters were captured near Kiukiang and held at a communist hospital along with five Chinese monks inside Kian.
An American steamer Ifung en route to Hankow from Ichang was fired on twice by a communist battery on the Yangtse river. An American naval armed guard aboard the Ifung returned fire effectively and no damage occurred. The battery was located a few miles above Hankow.
Bishop Migniani and a Chinese priest said no mission buildings were burned as they departed under Reds orders to demand 10,000,000 Mexican for the missionaries' release. The bishop left Kiang on October 14 and reported buckets of gasoline placed in church buildings. Further Kiukiang advices noted continuing coverage.
Gopal Singh Khalsa, a representative of the Indian National Congress in the U.S., married Miss Trene Hall, 20, a University of Colorado freshman in Boulder. The couple met a year ago during Khalsa’s lecture tour at the university.
In Memphis area on October 22 two young men were found alive despite severe head injuries in a fire burning in the Mississippi river bottoms opposite Memphis on the Arkansas bank. A. L. Shushan said he will seek state approval to refinance the Orleans levee board with a 1 million dollar borrowing to fund local levee construction near New Orleans. New Orleans counsel filed lawsuits against eight film firms for 40 300 in three years taxes on gross receipts under a city ordinance.
Col Hollingsworth B Barret of Shreveport will be the Armistice Day principal speaker as the American Legion plans a large city event. He is a former lieutenant governor candidate with a noted World War I record and current commander of the 156th Infantry Louisiana National Guard. The parade opens the program and is expected to draw a record crowd.

John Troxler, a convicted bootlegger and family man, began serving a $50 fine in the county jail after his liquor conviction. Federal Judge John Gore quipped about Troxler’s 23 children, then proceeded with the sentence.

In BLUEFIELD West Virginia on October 22 Mrs Minne Stull thirty was held under guard in Princeton jail amid threats of mob violence after being accused of boiling her eight year old stepson Micky Stull. The boy said he was dipped in boiling water four or five times before dying in a Princeton hospital minutes later.
A Cleveland woman testifies that her husband Fred C. Jackson is sometimes friendly yet has been drunk for three years and abused her with a knife and shotgun. The Common Pleas judge asks about divorce. she refuses, seeking alimony instead, and the court orders Jackson to pay $50 a month or face jail.
Chicago laborer A C Mayerle encounters a gunpoint robbery. The thief, a starving man with a sick wife and four kids, pockets $35 but takes only $10 after Mayerle appeals. Mayerle then helps the man and family, later aiding him with hospital care and funds. Mayerle seeks a permanent job for the robber, underscoring harsh conditions.
In Chicago on October 22 two broker couples returning from a fashion show were held at gunpoint by three robbers who stole rings and bracelets totaling about 64000. Rings valued at 30000 and 10000 were taken, others were insured, while some pieces were spared. The crime echoes a prior high profile theft from Mrs. William Hale Thompson.

In Red River at Boyce a woman’s body was found floating. coroner believes she is the wife of a fisherman who with his wife were drowned last Friday when their house boat sank. The fisherman’s body has not been recovered.
Baton Rouge reports the Louisiana highway commission reached an agreement with the U S bureau of public roads providing 2 9 million dollars in federal aid for ten proposed bridge constructions. Federal inspectors toured eight sites under a 7 million dollar bridge allotment within a 75 million dollar highway and bridge bond issue to be voted on November 4. State officials expect federal aid on all tour bridges and plan bidding on five projects late December.
