A 13 year old Bastrop girl was wounded when a rifle left by two boys discharged as a young boy picked it up. Investigators say the weapon discharged by accident causing injuries to the girl as bystanders watched. Police are reviewing how the gun was left within reach.
Leila Mae Westbrook a 13 year old girl lies in critical condition after a .22 rifle discharged as Edward Wall a four year old boy picked it up. The incident happened near Madison park while siblings Willie Westbrook and Roy McCall watched and the wounded girl was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery.
A postcard arrived in Monroe from Germany aboard the big Zeppelin. It is addressed to the Southern Hardware company and bears a Leipzig trade exposition greeting. The reichmark stamp is noted for its high collector premium and the words Mit Luftpost Par Avion appear under the address.
The morning rainbow is cited as a sailor warning of unsettled weather. A forecast calls for cloudy, colder conditions in Louisiana tonight, with southeast fair and colder, and warmer in the northwest on Tuesday. Frost is predicted for northern Arkansas tonight.

The court refused to pass on a new prohibition enforcement question over seizing foreign vessels beyond the three mile limit when cargoes of alcohol are not listed on manifests. Coast Guard seized the French schooner Mistinguette and British Rosie M B off Long Island with liquor cargos, aiding the government’s stance that lack of manifest supports jurisdiction. Captains argued no shore contact and questioned delivery routes to Nasau and the British West Indies.
Louis A. Barnhill a 52 year old traveling salesman from 200 Layton Ave died in an auto wreck near Arcadia Saturday. His body was shipped to Port Gibson Oklahoma for funeral and interment. Eye witness Miss Gwendolyn Simpson of Shreveport provided details of the fatal incident.
The Lee street arena in Alexandria Louisiana owned by Mike Mule was razed by a fire last night with an estimated loss of $20,000 and no insurance. An open gas jet is suspected as the cause.
Mrs. H C MacDonald clings to dreams that her husband survived the Atlantic attempt in a tiny Moth plane and is stranded on a rocky island. Sir Herbert Barker and another friend report matching dreams of Rockall, 200 miles off Scotland, prompting a request to the admiralty, though officials hold back search plans.
Willie Williams a 32 year old crippled newsboy on a Buffalo to San Francisco trip visits Monroe for a few days selling The News-Star copies each afternoon. He travels by bus, rail or car pool and has crisscrossed 800 towns in 29 months collecting postcards and letters from officials, recently adding notes from Vicksburg and Jackson officials.
John Edwin Grace T Gunion and George W Prince were found guilty of first degree murder in Memphis for the November 21 shooting of John E Levy the tamale king. They faced the death penalty after a cap dropped at the scene served as the only clue and $119 carried by Levy was not recovered.
Fred Jackson charged with murder of J. M. Kelly arraigned in district court and set for trial November 13. He is held on a grand jury indictment. Walter Foster Frank Carby and Dan Sanderford arraigned for robbing Ouachita Baking Company of 353 dollars. Foster later pleaded not guilty with plan to testify. Docketed for November 8. Carby and Foster in jail. Sanderford out on 1500 dollar bond. Court instructed them to file affidavits requesting counsel under new law.
The state board of pardons denied Vernon Scruggs the requested pardon for the Mildred Thomas murder. Attending members included Attorney General Percy Saint Lieutenant Governor Paul Cyr and trial judge Percy Sander. Tom Newton, Scruggs' attorney, vowed the fight would continue.
J Harvey Smith former Alabama and South Bend detective was arrested today over the disappearance and death of Ina Lee a South Bend divorces and beauty shop owner. Lee vanished and her body was found in a lime pit near Elkhart Indiana seven months after Smith was hired for 50 by Mrs Charles Reyher wife of a local realtor to “get the beautician out of town.” Reyher has been held in connection with the case as Smith also vanished.
E. Moore was arrested late Saturday night at Five Points by the sheriff's department on forgery charges. Checks totaling 117 dollars were cashed at several stores using varied forged signatures. Sheriff Milton Coverdale notes Moore had prior forgery conviction and served time in 1927.
Ernest Murf of Gattman Mississippi slashed his throat from ear to ear on his farm. He was found unconscious in a barn by family members and was in serious condition at Amory Hospital. Despondency is blamed for the self inflicted injury.
In New Orleans civil district court Thomas J. Healy was ordered to show cause by Friday why he should not be ousted as New Orleans police superintendent in favor of Captain Theodore Ray, named by the commission council. Healy had left the post October 1 amid retirement plans but reappeared and claimed he never resigned. The council then appointed Ray, and the dispute went to court.
Frances Newman the Atlanta novelist and author of The Hard Boiled Virgin died in New York today after a cerebral hemorrhage. She had been in Europe this summer pursuing literary work and was a member of Atlanta society.
Mobile native Lucretia Alexander died at 102 in Mobile Alabama. Born July 13 1826 she spent her life in Mobile. She is survived by six grandchildren eighty two great grandchildren and eighty three great great grandchildren. Her birthday celebrations continued for the last decade.
Harsvey L. Smith a former private detective from South Bend Ind was arrested in Atlanta in connection with the slaying of Ina Lee a South Bend beauty shop owner whose body was found in a lime pit last Monday Smith allegedly admitted being paid 60 by Janie Reyher wife of a South Bend realtor to obtain evidence against Mrs Lee Reyher reportedly hired the detective to remove Mrs Lee because of suspicions of an affair Extradition waived and officers headed to Indiana with the suspect
Chicago report says state witness George Reind, a primary day watcher, vanished while testifying about election frauds. Special assistant attorney general David Stansbury leads the case against Morris Eller aides. Reind was reportedly kidnapped at the polls on primary day.
New York October 22 Col Charles A Lindbergh flying his Curtiss Falcon surveyed landing fields for the Transcontinental Transport company on the way to bear hunt in Mexico. He stopped in Columbus Ohio for the night as Mexican aviators planned to meet him at the border and escort him to La Biblia ranch for the hunt.
