SEC Hearing Recesses On United Gas Sale

SEC hearings on United Gas Corp proposed sale of its Shreveport distribution system were recessed until November 7. Testimony will continue with residents of Louisiana and Mississippi communities opposing the sale allowed to speak. UGDC offers 140 million dollars for the 400 community system spanning three states.

Eviction Papers To Be Served On Land Claimants

The Federal Alliance of Land Grants announces it will serve eviction papers on the Forest Service over 500000 acres in northern New Mexico. Reies Tijerina says lawyer Jerry Noll will file to vacate land in the Carson National Forest near Abiquiu. Forest Service attorney Richard Fowler says they will respond after reviewing the papers. About 350 alliance members briefly staked a claim before leaving, noting the town is established. The group, largely of Spanish American heritage, bases its claim on the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

Two Men Die In Fiery Gunpowder Explosion

ASTON, HK AP A truck driver's helper and a bait shop owner were killed when 7000 pounds of gunpowder exploded inside a truck trailer. Flaming debris covered about a square block and three buildings were destroyed. The dead are Marle Olive 53 owner of Murle's Bait Shop two blocks downtown Alton and Harry Braga about 40 of De Soto Kan an employee of Pilshaw Ammunition Co of Kansas City.

Veterans Day Parade Plans Mark Weeklong American Legion Observance

Monroe mayor signs proclamation designating Oct 23 to Nov 11 as American Legion Weeks. A Veterans Day parade is planned with about 400 people and 100 cars, lining up at 9:30 a.m. at West Monroe First Baptist and proceeding over the old bridge to DeSiard Street. The event includes a memorial ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Faulk Post with an Howard address.

Davis Plans TV Opposition to Louisiana Two-Term Amendment

Former Gov Jimmie Davis announces a televised opposition to the two term amendment limiting Louisiana governors to back to back terms. The measure would allow Gov McKeithen to seek a second term and is tied to his re election bid. Davis, a potential 1967 candidate, will air comments on eight stations starting in Baton Rouge.
