A long drouth lasting about sixty days was broken yesterday afternoon and last night by a heavy rain of 2.85 inches in less than 24 hours. The last meaningful shower was August 22 with 1.35 inches, September 12 with .35 inches, and September’s total only .65 inch. The rain allowed farmers to harvest crops while hay is well cured and most cotton and corn are gathered despite city discomfort.
Chas A Zilker of Memphis representing himself and others bought the People's ice plant in West Monroe from Union National Bank. New owners plan moving the plant to Monroe, installing new equipment to reach 125 tons daily and bore artesian wells for water. Erection to start soon, aiming operation by next spring. Purchasers own ice plants in Memphis Birmingham Vicksburg Jackson and Meridian.

In St Louis on October 18 the house of deputies of the general conference of the Protestant Episcopal Church voted to remove the morning and evening prayers for the president from the service and replace them with a national safety prayer. The new text asks for wisdom and strength for all in authority to do Thy will, with no plea for the president’s long life or prosperity.
The house, defying protests, voted to strike the phrase the governor of this State from the evening prayer. The change, urged by the commission on prayer book, awaits approval from the house of bishops and the next general convention. Knoxville, Tenn. Oct 18. The Appalachian Logging Congress opens its fall meeting in Knoxville to discuss economical logging and conservation with representatives from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland and other Southern states attending.

The U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that State militia members remain in Federal service despite not taking the oath under the national defense act. The decision reverses the Federal District Court ruling.
Representative T. T. Webb reports a telegram from Governor Ruffin G. Pleasant stating he will attend the Calhoun Fair on Wednesday October 25 and deliver an address. He will discuss proposed constitutional amendments and urge their adoption. Voters are urged to attend to hear the governor and vote more intelligently.
A tropical hurricane moved inland east of New Orleans today. The storm's 68 mile per hour winds battered coastal areas and prompted advisories but caused no immediate reports of injuries. Officials warned residents to remain indoors and monitor updates as paths remained uncertain.
The Associated Press report from New Orleans details a tropical hurricane near the Gulf Coast. Fort Morgan Alabama reports 98 mph winds at 6 45 this morning while Mobile and Pensacola measure 72 mph at 8 o clock. A Mobile telegraph says 90 mph winds at 9 percent. Telegraph and telephone lines fail between New Orleans and Mobile and Pensacola after 9 this morning. Washington orders hurricane warnings displayed from New Orleans to Apalachicola Florida as the storm moves inland with increasing intensity.
New Orleans reported a rising barometer as a wind raged near Mobile before communication failed. Chicago observed wheat prices surging since the European war began with December futures at 1.68 dollars a bushel.
New Orleans October 18. A sensational season high in cotton occurred on a hurricane rumor with prices rising about $4.50 per bale. The July option surged to 19.17 cents per pound, the highest ever recorded on the local market.
The Supreme Court of the United States dismissed Monroe Louisiana appeal from a state mandamus decree ordering the city of Monroe to levy and turn over annually a 3 mill school tax to Ouachita Parish School Board. The litigation was not prosecuted.
