Sheriff Milton Coverdale, a noted Ouachita parish peace officer, was seriously injured early Wednesday when a vehicle carrying four prisoners to Angola collided with a truck near Baskin. Dr. William Preston Few, 72, president of Duke University, died at Duke Hospital at 7 am after a heart attack a week prior. He led Duke since 1910 and helped transform Trinity College into a major endowment university. Survivors include his widow Reamy Thomas and four sons.
