London eyes possible German gas attack as air raids intensify. A dying Nazi pilot warned Britons to carry gas masks, while German civilians are ordered to stock masks and German authorities deny British gas use.
Associated Press reports a massing of Red Army troops planes and guns along the Soviet Romanian frontier amid uncertainty if Europe will widen the war. Turkish fortifications are rising on the Turkish Bulgarian frontier Greece and Turkey cooperate while Germany and Russia bolster positions near the Danube.
Voters in the Fifth district will choose between incumbent Newt V. Mills and Edward L Boots Gladney for Congress. Polls open 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. A light vote predicted amid parishwide quiet campaigning. Mills led a six candidate field in the first primary with about 3 000 votes short of a majority.
Dr Samuel A Scott pioneer physician of Eudora Arkansas died in a Vicksburg hospital after four months illness He donated land for Eudoras founding and practiced medicine about 50 years He is survived by his wife Mrs Forestine Scott a son Dr E W Scott of New York a sister Mrs T L Story of Marthasville Louisiana and several nieces and nephews Funeral services will be held in Eudora Wednesday with his son to be taken there tomorrow.

In Mahanoy City Pennsylvania two coal miners William Burke 28 of Robinsons and William Goodman 60 of Mahanoy City were rescued after 65 hours entombed as a cave in filled 50 feet of an entry. They were exposed and shocked but survived with later reports of oppressive air. A relay of 150 miners drilled and dug a four foot shaft to reach them and carried Burke out while Goodman waited for a stretcher.
Adjutant General Raymond Fleming announced that Louisiana is fully prepared for the upcoming Wednesday draft registration. He sent a telegram to national director Lewis B. Hershey confirming complete readiness across the state.

The United States Weather Bureau in New Orleans predicts colder weather for North Louisiana within 24 hours. Sunday showed a 37 percent temperature swing from high to low at Selman Field with a 88.8 high and 52.1 low. The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and colder conditions in the northwest tonight and in the north and west areas Tuesday.

In Rayville on October 14 five of twelve jurors were selected to hear the murder case of W. H. Carter a Delhi barber charged with killing John L. Gibson on Delhi streets. Carter was indicted by the Richland parish grand jury on October 4 before Judge Carey J. Ellis with District Attorney J. Vernon Sims prosecuting.
Volunteers in Criminal Judge Fred Oser's court begin retabulation of ballots from the February 20 runoff primary. Attorney General Eugene Stanley and District Attorney J Bernard Cocke urged the recount which may extend to all city boxes. First four wards were retabulated.
Six thousand farm athletes prepared for the corn husking national meet to be held October 30 near Davenport Iowa. County and state contests trim entrants to 24 finalists who will husk 40 to 60 ears per minute on a moving wagon. States in the circuit include North Dakota South Dakota Nebraska Kansas Wisconsin Minnesota Iowa Missouri Illinois Indiana Ohio and Pennsylvania may join soon.
In Columbia four of 36 escapees from the Cummins prison farm face murder charges for killing Frank Gartman, an automobile dealer, during a tire repair clash. The half-filled courtroom heard jury selection as relatives watched, and hostages Miss Vancille Williams and Gladys Diamond attended.
Judge Ben C. Dawkins presided Monday morning in federal court here. Ed Burk received one year in jail for violating the liquor revenue law. Allen Levin pleaded guilty to using the mails to defraud. W. G. Duncan pleaded guilty to forgery. Albert Davis pleaded guilty to violation of the Mann Act. Prosecutors were Malcolm Lafargue and Patin.
Washington October 14 Senator Holt Democrat West Virginia blocked immediate confirmation of Clarence A Dykstra to lead the selective service as a matter of principle. Despite pleas from Democratic Leader Barkley and others the chamber moved to consider the nomination with required unanimous consent on Tuesday.
