He cites a 1951 State Department decision to leave Korea outside the Pacific defense perimeter as inviting the war and says United States was swindled into peace talks. He claims the Soviets timed the trap perfectly and asserts Communists emerged stronger. The address drew a massive crowd at Cow Palace.
J A Biedenharn 85 prominent citizen of Monroe died shortly after 11 am in a local clinic. He built Coca Cola bottling into a regional network, helped civic causes, and served on the Ouachita National Bank board and in several clubs and Masonic bodies. The family owns Coca Cola interests in north Louisiana and Texas. Funeral arrangements by Hixson Brothers were not completed at noon Thursday.
President Truman on the Truman train blasted Dwight D. Eisenhower as groaning over high prices while Republicans would end price controls if elected. He charged the GOP with old flim flam tax cuts and budget cuts and said they promise economic relief but threaten the treadmill of prices. A U S Air Force man charged with deserting his unit in Dayton Ohio was found on a five man life raft drifting in the Bering Sea. Spotted three miles from the Yukon mouth by civilian pilot O W Tasch the man said he aimed for Nome. He was taken aboard and turned over to authorities.
The 1952 53 Twin City Community Chest drive reported 61 percent of its $75 000 goal achieved, amounting to $45 773 37. General chairman David C Silverstein and co chair C D McAdams praised workers, hope for reaching the goal by October 11, and awarded outstanding service to many volunteers. Eleven men and one woman were selected in U S district court for the western district of Louisiana to hear the case of U S versus Delia Busch and Mary Etta Miller charged with transporting Gertrude Ethridge from Cordova Alabama to Monroe for prostitution. Ethridge testified Miller offered $100 weekly but she earned $12 in a laundry. She said Busch would provide the hotel work. Cross examination showed Ethridge had prior prostitution. The trial of Troy C. Cotton continued for a third day. he is charged with eight counts of false entries to the Veterans Administration.
Washington reports U S attorney Howard L. Doyle of Springfield Illinois testifies before a House judiciary subcommittee probing outside legal activity by federal prosecutors. Doyle, 58, denies wrongdoing while committee counsel says evidence suggests outside practice could conflict with government interests. The hearing also covers Justice Department decisions on the Pabst Brewing Company case.
South Korean soldiers fought continuous hand-to-hand battles with Chinese forces on White Horse Mountain for a third day. AP reporter Milo Farnell described infantrymen within 70 yards of the crest as both sides pressed fierce frontline combat near Seoul.
A father Julius Stockwell 34 and two children Leslie 19 and Elmer 3 died in a head on collision on the Airline Highway 15 miles south of Baton Rouge. The mother Linda Stockwell 5 suffered injuries after the crash that also killed the two children. The mother and a baby daughter were injured. State trooper George Strickland identified the dead and noted injuries. An accompanying report mentions wartime casualty estimates around White Horse and Chinese forces.
South Korean troops stormed China forces from White Horse hill near Seoul after a heavy artillery barrage. A front line officer said the weary force reached the summit at 12:30 a.m. with four quick stabs after inching up the slope amid fierce tank duels in the surrounding valleys.
The Ouachita parish grand jury heard 37 of 38 cases and will submit its report to the fourth district court this afternoon after inspecting parish and state institutions. The session began Monday and ran continuously, with the panel finishing last case near noon.
