Westbrook Pegler argues against American unionism as a menace to freedom and security. He condemns unions as reckless political mobs led by bosses, opposes Wagner Act figures, and calls for a system where labor and capital can coexist without monopoly power.
Congressman Otto E. Passman told the News-Star the 400 unit low cost housing project for Monroe has been approved by the public housing authority and will be listed among high priority dwellings. The two year program aims for 200 units now and 200 next year with planning funds awaiting President Truman’s signature.
Paris reports President Auriol accepted Premier Henri Queuille’s resignation after a deadlock over wage price policy. Queuille opposed a general wage boost sought by Socialists and De Gaulle supporters clamored for power. The coalition held 1 year 26 days, the longest postwar Fourth Republic tenure. Labor groups began maneuvering as consultations with leaders started.
A school bus and an ice truck collided seven miles north of Middlesex North Carolina. At least three children were killed and 15 hurt. Hospitals in Rocky Mount and Wilson treated the injured as officials sorted the total dead. Initial counts varied, with Nash County health officer reporting four dead and about 18 injured.
Judge Ben C. Dawkins sentenced Roy Mitchell to four years and Willie Boling to three years in federal prison for white slave traffic acts. Mitchell, already in Atlanta penitentiary, received four more years. Boling got a three year reformatory term. The men were arrested in Monroe last year after transporting their wives from Vicksburg Miss to Monroe for prostitution.
Police identified Pvt. Elvin J. Vidrine of Basile Louisiana as the victim. The 30 year old soldier was stationed at Schofield Barracks and was found dead on the Punahou school campus. Authorities suspect robbery as the motive.
Washington October six navy suspended Capt John G Crommelin from duty and confined him to his home after he disclosed confidential letters from three admirals to Secretary Matthews about navy morale. Crommelin said the leak was technical and done for the good of his country.
Civic Chest reported the Red Feather campaign had collected 5729.12 dollars through the first three days of the week. Donors listed include J. M. Cobb Brokerage, Swami Santha, George Romaro, Dr. G. M. Mott, W. T. Grant Company, Kellogg Lumber, Walgreen's, Ouachita Candy Co., Southern Hardware, Armour and Company, and others. The team credited weather conditions with a creditable showing.
Berlin dispatch reports Russia grants sovereignty to the planned east German republic proclaimed in east Berlin. Taegliche Rundschau says only administrative supervision remains and names Vladimir Semionov to replace Chuikov in government control. The new regime would be run by a national front with strong Communist influence and pledges to back Moscow on major policies.
President Truman signs a 1,314,010,000 arms aid measure authorizing American weapons for 14 countries across western Europe the Middle East and the Pacific to bolster collective security against communism. He called the act a notable contribution and urged international understanding while backing UN led arms control. Lawmakers who helped pass the bill attended the White House ceremony with eight beneficiary countries in Europe.
The P T A Study Group of Sherrouse school led by R F Siler and R E Foster calls a public meeting in Brown Hall at Northeast Junior College Tuesday at 730 p m to address urgent needs in the college area. Chief item is improved sewerage with other city concerns to be debated with the mayor two city commissioners City Attorney Henry Bernstein and Engineer Burke expected.
Robert E. Hannegan, former postmaster general and former owner of the St. Louis Cardinals, died at his home in St. Louis. He had been in ill health for some time and passed away between 10 and 10:30 a.m. EST. He sold his Cardinals stake last winter due to health, retired in 1947 to lead a syndicate, and had served as chairman of the Democratic National Committee and directed the 1944 president campaign.
The House approved a sweeping security bill by 333 to 14 to extend social security coverage to 46 million workers, raise minimum old age benefits, and add disability insurance. The plan, backed by Senate leaders, would boost combined benefits and tax rates over successive years, with full implementation targeted after 1950.
A Monroe theft and forgery suspect, O. O. Buxton, former lumber salesman, was arrested in Petersburg, Virginia. He faces 14 warrants for theft of 1200 dollars and forgery of checks totaling 715 dollars, and will be returned once extraction is cleared.
President Truman warned the world against an arms race while saying he doubts Moscow will accept Russia's forthcoming atomic energy proposal. He urged strengthening the United Nations to house atomic control and asserted the United States will not alter its position after declaring an atomic blast. He noted no other nation with a weapons edge has offered to place it under world control.

President Truman said the coal and steel strikes have not yet required his intervention. John L. Lewis agreed to attend a government sponsored peace parley on the coal strike tomorrow, with coal operators also accepting. Cyrus Ching called the mediation talks as the coal situation nears a crisis, while Truman noted progress on synthetic fuels from Utah shale and Virginia coal experiments.
New York Oct 6 AP Preacher Roe silenced the Yankees with six hits to give Brooklyn a 1-0 win at Yankee Stadium and tie the World Series at one game apiece. Robinson scored on Hodges RBI in the second inning as Roe held the Yanks in check through seven. The game marked the second straight 1-0 victory in the series, a first in World Series history.
Harold E. Stassen president of the University of Pennsylvania suggested in Philadelphia that he may seek the 1952 presidency. He said timing is too early to decide but remains deeply interested in public affairs and issues affecting peace and living conditions. He was an unsuccessful Republican candidate last year.
Arizona endurance fliers led by Bob Woodhouse and Woody Jongeward extended a six week stay in the air as they surpassed the prior world endurance mark of 1,008 hours in Yuma. The City of Yuma four place Aeronca monoplane finished the record flight at 9:15 p.m. EST, drawing about 10,000 people at Yuma County airport and celebration across the city. The pilots plan to return next week, around Columbus Day, as fatigue lingers but both say they remain capable of longer flights if needed. Riedel and Barris sent a note of congratulations.
Pittsburgh dispatch reports the C. I. O. United Steelworkers closing a pact with Henry J. Kaiser while expanding the strike to two additional plants. The nationwide steel shutdown over pension disputes enters its sixth day as federal action lingers.
Washington Oct 6 A housing program to spur modest home construction remains in a congressional pigeonhole as the Senate approves a stopgap extension of the federal home loan insurance program through March 1. The move delays the broader reform bill supported by Senate Democrats and questions action before adjournment. Senator Sparkman notes the shelving resulted from leaders preparing to study housing conditions in Europe, and from anticipated lengthy debate over a rural telephone measure. Upward of the long range bill’s fate hinges on further negotiations and possible floor action next session.
