New Orleans Oct 4 The cotton market showed a firmer start with December around 7.29 and March near 7.44 as stronger cables and private crop estimates boosted sentiment. By afternoon, prices eased to about 7.02 7.25, with net gains of 4 to 8 points on the day and exports totaling 37,511 contracts.
Early advances in cotton prices due to unfavorable weather and smaller crop estimates gave way to realizations and hedge selling. December futures rose to 7.92 after touching 7.28 during the day, with late trade modestly higher and spot activity quiet at mid-dling 7.15.
On October 4 wholesale prices showed Louisiana okra at 50 cents per bushel while snap beans moved 1.00 to 1.25, butter beans 1.23 and cucumbers 1.00 to 1.25. Iceberg lettuce 2.75 to 3.00 per crate. onions 61 to 75 cents. Cuba avocados 1.85 to 2.00. pineapples 3.50 per crate. oranges 2.60 to 3.25. grapefruit 3.15 to 3.60. pears 2.15 to 2.50. and other staples varied across crates and sacks.
Hogs 18,000 with 6,000 direct. prices mostly steady to 10 lower with 180-280 lb hogs 4.00-4.10 top. Cattle 9,000 and calves 2,000. fed steers and yearlings unevenly steady to 25 lower. vealers firm. Slaughter steers 600-990 lb 7.00-9.25. 1100-1300 lb 7.25-10.00. 1300-1500 lb 7.50-10.00. cows and heavy weights mixed. Sheep 20,000. fat lambs mostly 5.00-5.0?. ewes 90-150 lb 1.25-2.50.
Call money remains steady at 2 percent all day. Time loans hold at 14 to 6 months 11 to 4 to 11 2 percent. Prime 4 commercial paper at 2. Bankers' acceptances unchanged.

Foreign exchange fluctuates with Sterling softening and a generally higher cotton market due to weather and trade buying. Sugar declines on hedge selling and coffee rises on trade buying. USDA notes steady potato trade with total U S shipments at 423. Wisconsin and Minnesota Cobblers quoted 6 to 65 cents per cwt, Early Ohio spuds 55 to 60 cents, South Dakota Early Ohioos 60 to 65, Idaho Russets and Colorado MacCiures around 1.00.

The accident cost five lives and prompted buoy marks and a search for the master and four crew members. Company officials and survivors testified before the board of inquiry as responders aided the search.

Valentin Gonzalez a 56 year old man lay ill on a cot for days in Juarez near the Mexican border. His wife also sick could not help. Neighbors passed by heedlessly and he died. Police later took the wife to a hospital and provided food. The husband was buried in a pauper's grave.
Miss Elizabeth Porter of the Family Service Society arrives to assist the Reconversion Finance Corporation relief effort in Ouachita parish. 493 employment registrations were filed yesterday, the highest since the program began, with branch offices opening in Swartz Calhoun Sterlington Bosco and West Monroe for local registrations.

H P Milo Milam aged 91 from a prominent Pontotoc county family in Mississippi died at his Dallas home on October 4. He had been a longtime figure in the Pontotoc community and his death marks the loss of a noted local family member.
