A four state alert was issued Tuesday night for Billy Frank Gross and Harmon Benjamin Wingard charged with first degree murder in the beating death of Frank A. Birch. Police in Louisiana Texas Mississippi and Arkansas were asked to aid searches for the two men.
Trial for three white men charged with illegally possessing dynamite in Birmingham racial bombings was set for next Tuesday afternoon. State investigators found 133 sticks of dynamite in a North Birmingham wooded area as part of the bombings probe.

Tom E. Hicks of West Monroe Ouachita Parish served 24 years on the parish police jury. Divers lifted the 400 pound bronze bell from the Civil War era Union gunboat Cairo near Vicksburg Mississippi as part of recovery work before raising the ship. Markings show it was cast in Cincinnati in 1860 along with a blacksmith axe a pulley bars for cannon actions and a ramrod. The Cairo sank in the Yazoo River after hitting a Confederate mine over a century ago.
Buck Buchanan, a former Texas rancher, raises a Brahman Charolais cross on two Eureka area ranches six miles north of town. He began with 60 Charolais and 1,000 Brahman cattle and produced a 4,086 pound bull named Pete, claimed to be the world’s largest. A larger two year-old bull in Texas is expected to surpass Pete.
