Former Georgia governor E D Rivers and his wife were attacked at their Lakeland home as an apparent kidnapping plot failed. The assailant, who also killed himself at a roadside camp, left behind a draft note and used the name Horace Waters Bikle from a Pittsburgh address. Police traced a possible New York connection, while an America First office denied any link to the man.
In Lexington Kentucky on October 2 a police chief announced a suspect about 17 years old was arrested in Shelbyville for the slaying of Marion Miley a noted golf star and the fatal wounding of her mother Elsa Miley. The two intruders wore masks and demanded receipts at the Lexington Country Club apartment. Mrs Miley died later of abdominal wounds after funeral services for Marion. Major Joe Burman led state police in the investigation.

A twin motor Canadian bomber with half loaded bomb racks skidded into a hay field near Greenland New Hampshire in early dawn. All four crew members escaped injury as the plane, damaged but intact, slid about 200 feet through the field after a flight that apparently went over the Atlantic. A Portsmouth navy yard worker reported two bombs remained in the left racks while the right racks were empty.
