SASTROP La Oct 1 Special Grimes of near Mer Rouge was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon by Bastrop police Chief Wil Cox when Grimes resisted arrest and aimed a pistol. Coroner Dr Leavell said the shooting occurred at about 2 36 pm after Cox stopped a car near Bastrop for reckless driving. Witnesses testified at the inquest that Grimes drew a pistol and threatened the chief before he was shot in self defense.
A former convict, wanted for questioning in the disappearance of 5 year old Pamela Hollingworth, was taken into custody by Boston police denying knowledge of the girl. A wooded search failed to find Pamela who wandered from a picnic. County officials urged the man to report for questioning. authorities noted possible links to a long unsolved case. A reward was raised to $350 for Pamela's return.
Irving Perimeter reports Washington pricing trends as new defense revenue and tax measures take effect. Excises yield about 3 million daily while overall program targets roughly 13 billion for 1941. Morris Ware, an 18 year old barefoot bridegroom from Ruleville Mississippi, won the national cotton picking championship in Blytheville Ark. A B Karnes of Senath Missouri took second with 130 pounds and Ike Y Polk of Hayti Missouri earned third with 100 pounds.
London October 1 The house of commons approved a new war credit of £1 billion about $4 billion to cover rising war costs. Chancellor Kingsley Wood said expenditures now total about £1,000,000,000 per day, more than 50 percent higher than peak World War I levels, and the billion pound loan should last until about year end at the current rate. Expenditures over two years reach £7,018,000,000.
Portland dispatch reports two teen girls Betty Waldron aged 18 and La Venne Wood aged 17 died in an apartment last night by suicide after being shunned by boys. Det Myron Warren said six gas jets were open and death by own action notes were found in the living room.

U S army troops commanded by Major General Charles H Bonestee landed at Reykjavik to reinforce the northern garrison. The operation was workmanlike and precise as working parties offloaded men from large transports. Major General H C Curtis welcomed them ashore.
Shreveport Louisiana October reports five injured in a head on crash on highway 1 between Bossier City and Barksdale Field. Ward Sikes 39 a Monroe insurance man suffered severe arm fractures that may require amputation. Also injured were Roy Robinson Jr 24 Carl Fridena Floyd Wolf 22 and Joseph Gifford 26 all connected to Sikes or Barksdale units.
