New York stocks extend their slide with the Dow Jones industrial average dipping to 895.35, down 3.48 points by noontime. The market shows more losers than gainers by over two to one on the NYSE, continuing the seven session decline.
President Carter, during a stop en route to Washington, said the U S has taken the first faltering steps toward better Cuba relations and that any progress will depend on the Cuban government. Talks in New York reportedly discuss exchanging diplomatic reps and possibly releasing 27 Americans jailed in Cuba.
Marvin Layne Duke 27 of Monroe pled guilty to possession of marijuana and contributing to child delinquency. He was sentenced by Judge John R. Joyce to concurrent terms totaling 18 months in parish jail with a two year suspended term on the delinquency count and five years probation including one year in jail. Duke owned Child Development Services of Swartz and faced charges for giving marijuana and alcohol to youths. fourteen residents were named in the information.
