Stock rallies as Dow recovers from week long drop

New York shares bounced in a technical rally after a sharp week and a half decline. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 3.48 to 902.14 by noon as gainers led losers 7 to 4 on the NYSE. The Dow ended last week below 900 for the first time in 16 months.

Hanafi Jurors Briefed in D C Murder Kidnapping Trial

Superior Court Judge Nicholas Nunzio briefed about 425 prospective jurors in the Hanafi Muslims case at the Pension Building Washington. Defendants led by Haamas Abdul Khaalis sit with lawyers as 650 were called and 425 appeared for jury questioning amid heavy security and sequestration plans.

House Committee Rejects Pot Changes

Washington NP A special House narcotics committee rejected a Carter administration plea to repeal federal penalties for small marijuana possession. The panel released a report saying it would not offer conclusions on reducing penalties. Keith Stroup of NORML viewed the report as expected with little gain. Testimony noted no prosecutions under the law in the past two years.

Final I-20 section completes North Louisiana span

The last segment of the I-20 corridor, costing 13.9 million dollars, finalizes the interstate across North Louisiana begun July 1958 at the Minden Interchange. It allows non stop travel from Fort Worth Texas to the Mississippi Alabama line, completing about 190 miles.

Monroe graduate Benjamin Burns earns law degree at Southern University

Benjamin Burns of Monroe son of Rev. and Mrs. Alex A. Burns graduated from the Southern University School of Law. He previously worked for Louisiana State Ten/Employment Security in the Win office and now serves as the District D representative on the Ouachita Parish Democratic Executive Committee. City crews cleaned and repaired the Anna Gray Noe Park fountain and reactivated the water spouts in downtown Monroe.

Married Credit Laws Altered Across Nation

Millions of married persons will have credit histories carried in both spouses names under new guidelines. Federal Reserve official Ann Geary says this change helps women build credit, benefiting those formerly married, divorced, or widowed. Banks, retailers, and oil firms will include consent statements over four months, with oversight by FDIC OCC and FTC.
