Robert Lee Goldsby 33 died in the Mississippi gas chamber for the 1954 slaying of Mrs Morell Nelms near Warren. He spoke of sin to prison chaplain before execution and died 16 minutes after the chair was set. The case touched on segregation and related court battles.
An airman stationed at England Air Force Base was killed when a motorcycle lost control near Alexandria Louisiana and struck a traffic sign. His female companion was injured and taken to hospital. her condition was not described as critical. Authorities say the rider failed to navigate a curve at a traffic circle.

In Jackson Mississippi police announced unlimited jail space for Freedom Riders testing Jim Crow era segregation. Fifty two riders have been arrested on breach of peace charges with fines or 60 day suspended sentences. thirty four remain in jail as authorities say jails can absorb the crowd.
Luther Terry said a drug has almost certainly cured cancer in a specific type affecting pregnant women. He cautioned cures may not apply to other cancers and noted NIH figures that about half of 60 treated women survived after years of observation.
Ascension Parish police jury uses a publicly owned dragline and crew to help build a private country club in Gonzales. Juror president Leon Geismar says parish work is not delayed and the club benefits from equipment it could not otherwise obtain. Geismar and many Gonzales businessmen are club members.
John W M Rohrer 12 of Lititz Pennsylvania tripped on the word corralled becoming the first casualty among 73 contestants in the National Spelling Bee. The field included 49 girls and 24 boys who initially survived preliminaries that eliminated millions.
Psidium rallied to win the 182nd English Derby at Epsom as a 66 to 1 longshot. Dicta Drake, the French owned favorite, finished second in a photo finish. Pardao, an American owned entry, came in third. Pardao is owned by Mrs C. C. Iselin of Glenhead New York.
Secretary of State Dean Rusk urges Congress to approve a $4.8 billion foreign aid package and warns that failure could trigger global collapse. He argues aid must meet Communist aggression at every level and stresses economic aspects while noting nuclear age risks. Rusk delays Paris trip to brief Senate committee as Fulbright questions aid program governance.
In Atlanta the Negro leaders form a coordinating committee to sustain Freedom Rides through the deep South until desegregation of bus and rail terminals ends. If the ICC enacts Kennedy's desegregation petition, rides may end soon after. Walker says a watchdog network will enforce the new rules and branches will run in Montgomery Jackson and New Orleans. He rejects a cooling-off period.
The Labor Department reports a gradual employment pickup begun in March will continue through at least mid July with about two thirds of 130 major centers expecting slight seasonal gains. Farm employment should rise after spring rains and unemployment is expected to fall.
