Seven white Freedom Riders in Jackson start a hunger strike demanding federal court orders to end segregation in southern transportation facilities. Reports of alleged beatings at the county penal farm prompt an investigation. farm superintendent Thomas is briefed as detectives probe.
Mrs. Ethel Toombs Balfour 79 longtime Rayville resident and mother of Hugh G Balfour and James T Balfour died early today. A native of Ouachita Parish she lived in Rayville since 1905 and worked as a legal secretary for 50 years. Funeral services set for 10 a m Friday at First Baptist Church Rayville with interment in New Salem Cemetery under Mulhearn Funeral Home. Survivors include two sons three daughters a sister 13 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
New Orleans mayor DeLesseps S. Morrison, in office since 1946, is expected to resign before month’s end to become assistant secretary of state for inter-American affairs. The Times-Picayune reported an official announcement from President Kennedy when he returns from Europe. Morrison planned talks with Kennedy in Washington and had met with Secretary of State Dean Rusk earlier this week.

Six members of the Rose family from Freeport died when their car collided with a moving freight train on State Highway 288 near Angleton Texas. Linda Rose 8 survived in critical condition at John Sealy Hospital. the driver made no effort to stop and no skid marks were found. The family had left home 15 minutes earlier for a vacation to Thunderbolt Georgia.
Secretary of State Dean Rusk postpones departure to join President Kennedy in Europe to monitor the Dominican Republic crisis. He notes uncertainty over future governance but reports relative calm in the capital and no disturbances elsewhere.
