Maintenance of Way Union Plans Strike Referendum
The United Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way employees and railway shop laborers moves to issue strike ballots to about 478 000 members and 72 000 non union workers to oppose a wage cut ordered by the railway labor board. If the vote endorses action the walkout could start around July 5 affecting most US railroads. The executive council authorized sending ballots immediately and President Grable said results are due by July 1 with potential nationwide strike follow up.

Kiwanis Club awards prizes in membership contest
The Kiwanis Club held a membership contest prize ceremony last week at the club luncheon. Two teams tied for first. Sugar's Sweeties, led by acting captain B M Wakefield, won after a draw. Prizes were large red and white candy sticks for the losing team, while the real prize is a silver can engraved with winners’ names to be won twice for permanence. John E Hay gave the rational address on “The Poetry of Plumbing” noting plumbing has evolved from primitive setups to modern systems and stressing the craft requires both head and arm. The program also featured performances by Miss Casein Stubbs, Miss Charlotte Holden, and Miss Lillian Wallace.

Leading Citizen of Parish Dies at 75 in Ouachita
Jeff W. Ray aged 75 died Monday at his home in Ouachita parish seventh ward where he long served as a leading farmer. He was father of Prof. J. G. Ray, longtime Ruston schools superintendent who died recently. Ray passed away at the home of his son-in-law R L Golson in Cheniere. He leaves his widow, three sons I P Ray Julian Ray and Bud Ray and four daughters Mrs J L Pennell Miss Jettie Ray Miss Edna Ray and Mrs R L Golson. Funeral services were held at Antioch church with Rev. Elijah Hearne officiating and burial in Antioch cemetery.
