A military academy ceremony selected Miss Starr Color Girl for 1969 as cadet Kirk Land commanded the winning company during a year long competition. AP Wirephoto confirms the event and title.
American paratroops withdraw from Dong Ap Bia the 3000 foot peak after a ten day operation in the A Shau Valley. Officials say troops began moving off at daybreak though some forces remained atop the mountain. The assault left about 50 Americans killed and 300 wounded with 600 North Vietnamese reported killed. The action sparked U S political debate with Senator Kennedy questioning the battle’s justification. The broader operation continues in the A Shau Valley a stronghold used to attack Hue and Da Nang.
New York markets edged down as investors cited tight money. Dow Falls 4.33 to 334.33 at 1 p.m. AP average down 2.1 at 332.6 with industrials, rails, and utilities lower. notable movers include Bethlehem Steel and Jones & Laughlin down, Chrysler up modestly, IBM down 24 and Xerox up 1 at 271.

Justice of the Peace W E Richburg ruled murder and death by own action after autopsy plans and a note found in the car. Funeral arrangements set for Monroe with services in Lancaster and burial at Memorial Park Cemetery.
President Nixon requests 2.6 billion in foreign aid for the new fiscal year, about 900 million more than last year, framing it as essential to world peace and justice. The package includes 2.2 billion for economic assistance, 375 million for arms aid, and 75 million to start a private investment corporation.
A manhunt ongoing in Richland Parish after arson and burglary charges against J R Shipley 35 of Winnsboro. Shipley arrested Tuesday night. a car with two suspects fled roadblock near Nelson Bend Road Rayville as deputies fired buckshot and the vehicle was abandoned.

A nine count federal indictment charges Joseph P. Doherty former executive aide to the assistant postmaster general with bribery conspiring to secure a Baltimore main Post Office contract. He allegedly accepted 3000 of a 20000 bribe and used postal influence to aid Piracci Construction in Baltimore.
Los Angeles voters deliver a national record turnout to reelect Sam Yorty in a tight nonpartisan race against Thomas Bradley. With 6 of 2,890 precincts counted, Yorty led 53 percent to 47 percent, signaling strong support in white areas and ending Bradley’s bid to become the city’s first elected Black mayor.
Washington reports April imports of foreign merchandise rose to a seasonally adjusted 3.2 billion dollars, an all time high. The Commerce Department also notes a 177.5 million dollar trade surplus for the month as exports reached 3.4 billion dollars.
The 5th U S Circuit Court of Appeals ordered 37 Louisiana school districts to file new desegregation plans within 30 days for the 1969 70 term. The court reversed district rulings praising freedom of choice and ruled plans must show meaningful integration, with many districts lacking white student participation.
TEL AVIV AP four Israeli civilians and a soldier were wounded by gunfire from Jordan near the Sea of Galilee. A spokesman says mortar and small arms fire from across the Yarmuk River hit laborers at El Hamma five miles south of the lake. A two hour battle followed as Israeli forces returned fire. El Hamma is a Yarmuk tributary bathing resort and a noted trouble spot along the cease-fire line.
Four surviving Dionne sisters Marie Yvonne Cecile plan to mark the 35th birthday with a small private gathering hosted by Germain Allard in St Bruno while noting exams and family duties take priority. Cecile Yvonne and Marie live separately in Quebec City Montreal with their children and planned to attend. Emilie died in 1954.
