A railroad worker's scream led to the arrest of Leonard Thompson and an accomplice after a drunken man allegedly beat six family members with a heavy tool. Four people, including 8-year-old Hugh Merrell, are dead. others were wounded. Witness E. H. Levine described the events and implicated Thompson, who denies responsibility.
Washington May 28 President Coolidge approved the award of the distinguished flying cross to Captain Charles A. Lindbergh the New York to Paris flier for his wartime air service and achievements.
Dallas on May 28 reports final organization of the Big Four States Confectionary Dealers Association uniting Texas Oklahoma Louisiana and Arkansas. W Donald Jones of Dallas named president Ralph F White of Dallas secretary. The group aims for harmony among candy jobbers, better service to the public and fair profits and pricing.
A New York naturalization applicant declares his real name and birthplace, saying he was born in Tipperary and intends to become an American citizen. The exchange highlights identity and eligibility in the naturalization process.

Preparations are complete for City High School baccalaureate exercises at Grace Episcopal church tomorrow at 11 a.m. Rev. BE F Hayward will speak. The 32 graduates will decorate the church with flowers and class colors ahead of commencement Thursday night at the City High School auditorium.
Alexander Pantages, head of a vaudeville circuit, cabled Charles Lindbergh an offer of 10 000 dollars per day for 365 days. The announcement was made in Los Angeles on May 28.
Baton Rouge May 28 Engineers of the Louisiana highway commission report about 1560 miles of state, federal and parish roads are under water from the flood. Of these about 1000 miles are state and federal aid roads with others on parish roads. Main routes are blocked except Beauregard. Several state highway bridges have been destroyed by crevasse waters.

In Brussels King Albert of Belgium welcomed Captain Charles Lindbergh at the royal palace two hours after his Paris arrival. Lindbergh met Queen Elizabeth and the Brabant duke and duchess, amid a royal household reception and public attention.
May 28 report from Reynoldsburg ten miles east of Columbus states an army SLC-5 bombing plane returning to Langley Field from San Antonio crashed. Private Yeager died. Lt. D. M. Bridget, the pilot, was seriously injured. The plane and occupants were destroyed. Three other crew members were uninjured.
A massive well fire in Sanford Texas on Main street produced a 200 foot flame that burned for about 40 hours before being snuffed out by explosives and steam. Tex Thornton led the operation, using nitroglycerin and steam to seal the well while thousands watched. No injuries were reported.
Chicago May 28 Werner C Martin a Milwaukee suicide left a note claiming he killed a Chicago girl for faithlessness and then killed himself. Police tied him to Sarah Rapp and to a south side hotel room used by a couple calling themselves Mr and Mrs W E Milton. The maid identified a photo from the dresser as Martin and the body was found in the hotel room with a note citing unrequited love.
Detroit May 28 Mrs Lois Knowlton Dodge was granted a divorce from Horace E Dodge Jr son of the late automobile magnate in circuit court The decree will not become final until Judge Vincent M Brennan records it next week She cited cruelty accusing him of spending more time on speed boats and deserting her taking up a separate residence The husband was not present in court The judge found a prima facie case of cruelty.
The forecast calls for mostly fair conditions in the south and east gulf states with possible showers in the north portion and around midweek. Temperatures start above normal then cool later, except in Florida. Southern plains and west gulf states expect generally fair weather with local showers in the south early week and scattered showers toward week’s end. Seasonal temperatures prevail.
C. Glerum a radio operator on the Dutch steamer Hilversum revealed that the United States should thank him for the first news that Lindbergh reached Ireland. He picked up a German message, feared it unreadable, translated it, and broadcast it in English.
John Pleasant Harris was found guilty of murdering Katherine Wilson four years ago in New Orleans. The jury deliberated 1 hour 21 minutes. Attorneys announced an appeal to the supreme court if a new trial is sought. Harris faces hanging if no further action changes the outcome.
Mildred Thomas aged 18 daughter of J M Thomas of Ouachita parish died from a fractured skull after an automobile accident on the Monroe Bros road near Will Browns store. Vernon Scruggs 22 was taken into custody. an affidavit charging manslaughter followed. The incident occurred after a tire blew and the car went over a slight embankment.
As flood waters closed in, Delhi Louisiana promoted its slogan Capital of the Famous Macon Ridge and emerged as a strategic relief base with Red Cross aid and engineers coordinating from the town. The narrow long island formed by flood waters stretched hundreds of miles along the ridge, isolating Basins to the east and west while refugees sought safety.
