Sherman's March to Sea Author Buried in Los Angeles
Major Samuel H. M. Byers author of the war song Shermans March to the Sea died in Los Angeles after pneumonia at age 94. He wrote the lyrics as a Civil War prisoner in Columbia South Carolina and the song was set to music by J O Rockwell. Byers later served as U S consul and consul general in Switzerland and Italy.
