Community leaders from Ouachita and neighboring parishes argued that a proposed cent-and-a-half severance tax on natural gas would halt drilling, shut carbon black plants, and drive away investment. They cited revenue losses to landowners, tax assessor Joe Hanna noted carbon black firms pay substantial Ouachita taxes, while Texas cost advantages undermine feasibility.
Gas industry representatives contest Governor Long's natural gas price claims tied to a proposed severance tax. They say Texas gas in North Texas fields sells to carbon black plants at about two cents, far below Louisiana prices, and warn that a tax would push plants out of state or halt operations.
Weather outlook for the coming week notes fair conditions across the southern plains and west gulf states beginning Monday. Showers are indicated for Tuesday or Wednesday with temperatures near or slightly above normal.
In central Kansas a physician lured from his home Thursday night was found shot to death near a road 25 miles south of Oakley. Street car motorman D. R. Duke was robbed of about 12 dollars in pennies at 10 50 on the Lee avenue line. Police, including Superintendent H D Apgar and Sgt F S Pettit, questioned suspect Dan Wilcox, recently released from jail. A coat linked to the robber was found at Wilcox’s Harrison Street room. eyewitness D R Duke identified him. The robber was described as about six feet tall, 200 pounds, wearing blue serge trousers and large feet. Patrols conducted a search but yielded no arrest.
I. R. Thibodeaux and Curley Lee King are jailed on a joint information charging arson. District attorney David J. Garrett leads the case built on fire inspector C. C. Shea’s probe and a King confession obtained by Sheriff Milton Cordale. The fire damaged Thibodeaux’s market at 206 North Nineteenth Street, with $1,000 insured stock and fixtures.
Dewey Singleton, 24, was injured when a dead tree fell on him while logging about twelve miles northwest of Ruston. He suffered a skull fracture and brain injury and was taken to St Francis sanitarium in a dying condition. His father, Charlie Singleton, said the incident followed prior logging accidents and recalled his wife was killed by a falling tree ten years ago.
At the Saenger theatre Ouachita Parish High School awarded 113 diplomas the largest class in its history. Annie Laurie Breard gave the salutatory on The Modern Woman, John Munholland delivered The Our Today valedictory, praising education and service with Judge Bell also speaking.
