President Carter meets Prince Fahd in Washington as Saudi Arabia remains a key oil supplier and regional power. Fahd calls for U.S. pressure on Israel for a just Middle East settlement while noting public support for a Palestinian homeland.
The Louisiana Senate Finance Committee approved a 5.1 million dollar deficit bill for Grambling State University. President Ralph W. E. Jones blamed the deficit on student demonstrations in the 1960s, declining enrollment, aging facilities, and broad scholarships. The measure faces final Senate action as emergency legislation to cover payroll and current accounts.
Pfc. Robert Barton will graduate from the United States Army Defense Language Institute in Monterey California on June 16. He is the son of Mr and Mrs L G Barton of 1405 S 12th St Monroe.
South Moluccan separatists hold 105 children and six teachers at a Bovensmilde school and up to 80 hostages on a nearby hijacked train. Six gunmen inside the school and police around the train prompted talks of reprisals and a stop to a planned storming. The group demands the release of 21 jailed countrymen and a jet to leave the Netherlands by Wednesday. None of the children were injured as meals were delivered amid mounting tension.
The report details South Moluccan extremists seizing a train and a school in The Netherlands to press for independence. Gunmen later fired, asked for peace via a field telephone, and claimed a woman in the bicycle shed was an escapee from a mental institution. Police retrieved the woman. officials say prisoners and hostages may seek a jumbo jet to flee.
East Baton Rouge Sheriff Al Amiss seeks public defense funds for a $4.5 million lawsuit accusing him of false arrest and humiliation of George D Artois. D Artois alleges officers acted with malice, seeking publicity as reporters gathered, after a long standoff at his home.
