Ouachita Parish voters face four school tax measures

Voters in Ouachita Parish will decide four tax measures in a special election including a seven mill maintenance renewal, a five mill maintenance increase, a five mill for air conditioning across all schools, and an eleven mill bond to build seven new schools and remodel existing facilities. The measures total about 22 mills and funding is tied to a two year assessable rate with homestead exemptions.

Wallace Regains Sensation In Toes

Doctors at Holy Cross Hospital report Gov. George C. Wallace of Alabama has regained some involuntary movement in both feet and sensation to the mid thigh after gunshot wounds. The update notes left foot movement is stronger, normal reflexes remain, and overall condition is stable as surgeons plan to remove a remaining spinal slug.

Photographers to tour Ouachita locks before nine-foot channel dedication

Twin Cities CHIT-CHAT photographers from Monroe will depart Monroe Municipal Airport at 9 a.m. Wednesday for an aerial tour of the Columbia and Jonesville lock and dam systems and other Ouachita River highlights. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers provides the plane ride as a prelude to the summer dedication ceremony for the nine-foot channel.

The Tax Foundation reports Ouachita Parish in Louisiana got about 20.1 million dollars in grants from Washington as part of 29 billion nationwide. Justices Uphold Non-Unanimous Jury Convictions

The Supreme Court ruled 5 to 4 that state courts may convict noncapital defendants with less than a unanimous jury verdict. In decisions from Louisiana and Oregon, the court held a 9 to 3 verdict is permissible, challenging the long standard of unanimity. Woodin elected president of LSU system

Dr. Martin D. Woodin, LSU faculty since 1941, was elected president of the LSU system with 10 of 14 votes by the board of supervisors in Baton Rouge. Homer Hitt and Paul Murrill each received two votes. Woodin will oversee seven campuses including the LSU Medical School in New Orleans, replacing retiring Dr. John Hunter July 1.
