The Bureau of Labor Statistics said the consumer price index edged up two tenths of a percent in April led by higher costs for men’s clothing and restaurant meals while grocery prices fell. Gasoline and mortgage rates declined and weekly earnings rose to $132.83, with real pay up six tenths of one percent.
A bomb exploded in a Pentagon restroom causing major damage but no injuries as officials evacuated and searched the building. An antiwar organization claimed responsibility while security tightened ahead of new inspections. Offices, a computer center, and a shopping concourse suffered water and debris damage.
Vice President Spiro T. Agnew dismissed the idea of John B. Connally as the 1972 Republican running mate saying a registered Democrat switching sides in May is unrealistic.
