Bath Michigan recounts the deadly school blast by a demented farmer. Forty seven killed or injured as the attacker also destroys his home and outbuildings. Governor Green calls for state aid. Mrs Kehoe’s body found. eight year old Cleo Clayton dies in hospital.
In Bath Michigan, May 19, 1937, 36 children and five adults are dead after Andrew Kehoe exploded the consolidated school with dynamite. Forty four others were seriously injured and many minor injuries reported as a basement mine and timing device failed to kill all. Mrs Kehoe among the first victims, with evidence of a premeditated, careful setup aimed to destroy the building and kill all inside.
Army engineers report a new river feeding flood waters from the Tensas basin and Bayou De Glaize is tearing through Evangeline farmland. More than seven thousand people flee villages and towns as the flood expands toward the Teche and then the sea. Evacuations spread from Arnaudville to Breaux Bridge as trucks move evacuees to camps at Lafayette.
In New Orleans on May 19 residents of the west Atchafalaya basin flee rising flood danger. Flood relief director John M. Parker mobilizes operators to warn and urge evacuation from 100 to 150 miles NW of New Orleans. Twenty seven small towns affected.
Monroe hosts end of term exercises with two high schools planning ceremonies at Saenger theatre and City High auditorium. Parish high school class of 1927 totals 81 with 54 girls and 27 boys. Rev Marion S. Monk to preach the baccalaureate. Dr K H Harper to deliver the commencement address. City high School graduation lists 32 seniors. Rev E F Hayward to deliver baccalaureate sermon. Dr Frank O Kreager to speak at graduation. St Matthew's parish school schedules May 31 commencement with mass and speaker to be announced.
Lloyd Bertaud will not pilot the Bellanca in the planned Paris flight with Clarence Chamberlin. Charles A. Levine announced a new navigator will replace Bertaud, with identity to be kept secret until departure. Frank Tichenor mediated, Bellanca neutral, and Bertaud repudiated cited statements while offering to drop an injunction.
A large force on the Illinois Central railroad reconstruction between Delta Point and Monroe continues 24 hour shifts but faces slower than expected water recession. About 800 men push to rebuild amid flood damage as officials hope for quicker declines to reopen traffic toward Vicksburg.
Lloyd Bertaud was ousted last night by Charles A. Levine, backer of the flight, as the QUT airmen face cross currents. A new aviator will replace Bertaud, but the name has not been announced yet.
Marilyn Miller and Jack Pickford plan divorce proceedings in Paris in early June. Miller is in Chicago and will sail to France soon. Pickford will follow shortly. They seek an interpreter from Paris tribunal and will both attend, avoiding residence proof in France. Dudley Field Malone represents Miller in the French courts.
For the sixth day the search for the body of Dr. Lyman E. McDonald an 85 year old veterinarian drowned in the Ouachita river six miles south of Monroe last Saturday morning remains fruitless A vigil is maintained in hopes the body surfaces A $100 reward was offered by the sheriff's office for the finder.
A joint meeting of parish and city boards of health, called by Mayor Bernstein, outlined plans to protect the city from flood effects. Officials stressed eliminating outdoor toilets, expanding mosquito control, and removing flood refuse and dead animals to safeguard sanitation in the city and parish.
Baton Rouge May 19 A Louisiana flood reconstruction board headed by W H Sullivan of Bogalusa was appointed by Governor Simpson. The panel will meet Monday with Secretary Hoover present. Members include Wilson Williamson Peterman Gay Payne Kaplan Ellerbee Butler Speed Thompson Brosius and others.
Monroe Rescue Expenditions 1 2 and 3 operate from Ruston to Alexandria and Washington to aid flooded areas along Atchafalaya Gulf region. Since Sunday 2035 people have been rescued as crews reinforce bases in Lafayette St Landry and neighboring parishes amid severe inundation and rapid flood progression.
Shreveport May 19 Tom Taggart confident Indiana Governor Evans Woollen will lead Democrats to victory in 1928 nominating convention. He argues a Woollen win would settle the Smith McAdoo feud, avoid religion as a campaign issue, and unite the party for the presidency.
Miss Jessie Rogers was chosen Miss Monroe by three judges at the Saenger Theatre after competing with ten other contestants. The winner earns a trip to Galveston Texas for the International Bathing Beauty Pageant May 21 22 and 23.
Reports from leaders of three relief trains from Monroe praise their nonstop efforts. Volunteers are urged to report to the adjutant at the American Legion hall or call 3048 to relieve current crews and prepare for a potential fourth relief train.
Idaho Falls May 19 flood toll rises to eight with the Gros Ventre slide dam collapse sending walls of water through Kelly Wyoming four miles below the dam. The flood moved down the valley to Wilson 25 miles away as warning saved residents there.
Walter Hill the youngest son of James J. Hill divorced from his second wife Mrs Pauline Hill in a Montana district court after nine months of litigation. He then married Mildred Richardson daughter of Mrs C R Meyes of Long Island. Mrs Hill received 25000 cash plus 25000 in five years and 1000 monthly for life.
Signora Bruschi aged 23 has borne four sets of twins. Mussolini aid for patriotic service helped the family secure a low rent home.
Ground was broken on Lovers Lane at the Grayling spur for a new Monroe Ice company plant to cost 100000. The 60 ton facility on 80 by 146 feet will employ many, with M O'Brien as contractor.
