British airpower pounds German forces in French ruled Syria with raids on Damascus Rayak and Palmyra as German tanks advance toward Iraq and Suez areas, while Berlin reports ships firing on German coast defenses and anticipates next moves in the war.

Democratic Leader Barkley said Senate opposition would be light and Minority Leader McNary expected GOP support. the military committee trimmed a priorities division outside the OPM but House likely to accept and send the measure to President Roosevelt. Federal investigation launched after a million dollar fire at the W H Lear Lumber yard in northeast Philadelphia. Fire officials say the blaze appeared to start at five points, destroying the yard used for airplane wood and damaging nearby factories and shipyard facilities. Seventy injured, 13 homeless, watchman killed amid smoldering ruins. officials caution on cause and expect delays in examination.
A threatened General Motors strike was averted when GM accepted a national mediation board peace formula moments before the deadline. The settlement gives a flat 10 cent an hour raise to about 250 000 workers across 89 plants and ends a Detroit Ex-Cell-O dispute for the moment under the same mediation effort.

Dr. Alexis Carrel, noted scientist with anti Nazi views, has not returned from a trip to his wife in occupied France. James Wood Johnson, who accompanied him to Europe, says Carrel traveled to Brittany on April 7 and has not communicated since. Johnson suspects Carrel may be detained to aid nutrition work in the area.

Alexandria Louisiana May 16 four soldiers dead and seven injured in 24 hours at Camp Livingston in the 32nd division. Private First Class Edward A. Fields of Hazel Park Michigan was killed instantly when a truck overturned en route to war games. Private John Evanoff of Ypsilanti Michigan fatally injured in the same incident. Private James E. Keagler of Milwaukee Wisconsin died yesterday after an automobile crash near Jena Louisiana. Private Harris J. Soquet of Algoma Wisconsin drowned Wednesday night in a pool at Fishville about 15 miles north of here.
In New Orleans on May 16 charges were filed against eight men for the unauthorized cutting down of two large oak trees on St. Charles avenue where a sign board was erected. Bond for each man was set at 250 dollars. The incident drew wide attention due to the trees' shade value.
President Roosevelt urged France to reject any so called collaboration with Germany and warned that any puppet regime using western hemisphere colonies would violate the Monroe Doctrine. He noted U S action to protect Greenland and considered Latin American linkages if sovereignty shifts occur.
