President intervenes in the New York liquor controversy as repeal of the dry law meets agency actions. Federal authority complications are noted and the administration surveys public and private positions.
President Harding warned that repealing late prohibition enforcement statutes could spark more conflict between state and federal authorities. The remark, in a letter to Wesley Hall, follows a New York bill awaiting Gov Smith’s action.
The government announced plans to dismantle a rum fleet operation from Miami to Boston and obtained eight federal warrants charging conspiracy to violate the Volstead act and defraud customs. More warrants will be sought soon.
Theodore G. Bilbo former governor and gubernatorial candidate was bruised when a street car struck his automobile on a Jackson street. He then moved to a friend's car and headed to Hattiesburg for a planned speech.
Huey P Long rejects Klan links to his Governor race withdrawal, citing ongoing battles with Standard Oil. He warns religious divides could aid corporate power, while the West Monroe bond issue for 165000 dollars passes with strong support. Plans call for a 40 year bond, 6 percent interest, funding sewer and drainage upgrades led by City Engineer Reynolds.
In New Orleans on May 16 a 50 year old mother testified in criminal district court about how her second husband killed her son Charles Robinson, 23. The witness cried out under questioning, describing the events that led to the killing and she denounced the man as an evil power.
Rev. Trigg Thomas of Kansas City gave a revival sermon at First Presbyterian Church Monroe and delivered epigram filled remarks on Character. He defined character as what a person is alone and contrasted it with reputation. Rev. Wallace Clift praised luncheon clubs but urged solid moral grounding. The club plans cars for boys and girls clubs at 5 p m Saturday with musical entertainment by Mrs Allison Miss Boyce and Mrs Holden.
Kansas City May 16 Dr. E Y Mullins of Louisville Ky was unanimously re elected president of the Southern Baptist convention at the opening session of the seventy fifth annual meeting here today.
Mrs. B L Robinson, president of the Massachusetts Public Interest League, warned at an Emergency Aid meeting that radicalism and socialist propaganda are taught at Bryn Mawr and Wellsley colleges. Miss Marion Edwards Parks of Bryn Mawr denied allocations, blaming free speech. Robinson cited the Trade Union League and said Wellesley and Barnard foster radicalism, with women’s clubs hosting radical teachers.
George Jay Gould, American financier, died at his Mentone villa at 8 o clock this morning after a pneumonia illness. He had been ill at Cape Martin and was reported improving in April before a relapse on May 3. his wife and two children were present at his bedside.
Will Atkinson won the Monroe run-off for Commissioner of Public Streets and Parks over J. M. Marshall by 242 votes. Atkinson carried most wards, with Marshall winning Wards 5 and 6. Total turnout was 1,568 with Atkinson 905 to Marshall 668.
Hot Springs Ark May 16 Merchants reopen doors as crews clear wreckage from flood and mountain cloudburst flame. Central avenue main thoroughfare back in use as sanitary teams push into damaged areas. Utilities gas electric and streetcar service resume. Mrs Kate Christianson injured but recovering in hospital. Continued on page six.

Reports from Lincheng say armed bandits entrenched in the hills back of Lincheng may kidnap parties from Tsao Chawang negotiating for the release of foreigners seized on the Shanghai Peking Express May 6. Chinese gendarmerie seized the train from Peking to Shanghai, attacked officials, beat servants, and held the train for hours before control was regained.
