President Wilson informed Senator Martin that he objects to a broad renewal of the inquiry into the war effort. He warned that passing the Chamberlain bill would amount to a vote of no confidence and an attempt by Congress to take control of the war. Senator Chamberlain said he would not press army inquiries without a narrowed resolution.
The general conference elected Dr. F. N. Parker of Emery University as bishop on the third ballot. H. M. Dubose of Nashville and W. N. Ainsworth of Savannah were elected bishops on the fourth ballot. Parker, son of the late Bishop Linus Parker, previously led Monroe’s First Methodist Church and later headed Emery University theology. The session also vetoed laity rights for women and a ritual change to Christ's Holy Church.
Hot Springs Ark May 15 General officers of the Southern Baptist Convention were reelected at the opening session. Dr James B Gambrell of Dallas Texas remains president and George Moss of Shreveport La among the vice presidents as new officers are named.
The Associated Press reports from Washington on May 15 that the American casualty list includes 121 names. Eight service members were killed in action and others died of various causes.
The Monroe Gas Company announces a new policy giving tenants credit to purchase gas fixtures now with monthly payments. The move aims to prevent winter coal shortages by enabling residents to take advantage of available gas and cash discounts. Call at the Gas Office in the Central Savings Bank building to arrange purchases.
The first airplane mail flight between Washington and New York was inaugurated today with the President and Mrs. Wilson witnessing the departure from Liv 46 a. Mm. New York reports the first plane left New York at 11:55 this morning marking the start of a new air mail service.

Geo Karones proprietor of the White Way restaurant paid a 12.50 fine in city court for allowing slops fruits and vegetable matter to stand in open receptacles behind the restaurant. Jack Smith and Robert Criss received 20 days each for larceny in separate cases.
Federal court paused for advisement on a defense motion for an instructed verdict in Franklin State Bank v Maryland Casualty and US Fidelity. Three witnesses for the plaintiff would testify if present. two testified about party on horseback near Winnsboro and J W Womble Jr. hunting robins in a swamp at about 9 PM.
Prince David colored, a gardener for the Missouri Pacific railway, has six sons in the National Army with five in France, Tom Henry Elliott Samuel and John. Alex to enter the draft. He urges his sons to stay until Uncle Sam is through and the Kaiser is whipped. The father earns 20 cents an hour and owns $250 in Liberty bonds.
London May 15 The Austrian and German emperor at a meeting at German headquarters reportedly selected monarchs for Livonia Courland Esthonia and Poland according to a Copenhagen dispatch via Exchange Telegraph.
City officials met in the mayor's office with absent members Kaplan Bernstein and Atkins, to review council vacancies and revise committees including adding Austin and Walker to the finance panel chaired by Culpepper. Mayor Apgar said the session aimed to assess current status and noted no discussion of special elections.
Amsterdam May 15 The Vossische Zeitung in Berlin announces a counter action to the order of things observed declaring war at Kiev Slava and Odessa while Russian forces mass in the Don region according to the Berling paper.
Assessor Joe Hanna completed parish assessments which the Police Jury accepted today. The board of review discussed the 1918 tax basis but could not designate a percentage since total assessments are not yet available, with a forecast of about 50 percent of actual valuations.
District Attorney Odom advised the Police Jury on legal aspects of assessment matters during a meeting. Assessor Hanna left with Inspector Broussard to inspect land values around Monroe within five miles and will attend a capital meeting of assessors.
Dr Thomas F. Wright informs Dr Oscar Dowling head of the State Board of Health that he may take charge of the State Health Board branch laboratory authorized earlier. Wright cites inability to hire a technician and proposes Marie Notaefer of St Francis Sanitarium as lead bacteriologist for the Monroe site. Dowling plans a Monroe visit to finalize arrangements and keep lab work at the sanitarium. Monroe City Council recently approved a monthly maintenance appropriation.
A special meeting of the Anti-Vice Committee was held last night. The result of the meeting was not announced.
Nitrate of soda ordered for Ouachita farmers by Dr. M. Jackson has arrived and will be delivered at the V. S. and P freight depot tomorrow morning. About 40,000 pounds were ordered with a delivery price of 79.16 per ton, roughly 25 cheaper than normal channels. Buyers arriving later should bring 50 cents per 100 pounds to cover freight charges.
Ward 1 in Ouachita Parish reports success in the third Liberty Loan drive with about 1081 raised toward an 850 quota. Grayson Guthrie and Dr Y Smith led the effort with support from C W Phillips A L Smith R L Moore and others. Negro subscribers helped push Ward 1 over the top as parish leaders plan a parade in Monroe on Saturday featuring both black and white participants. Abe Arent expects the quota reached by Saturday and notes foreign corporations are withholding. Lincoln McConnell will speak here on Tuesday the 21st.
French troops attacked German positions near Mailles below Amiens and seized a wood on the west bank of the Avre river. German counterattacks were beaten off with severe losses. Night bombardments occurred near Montdidier and Noyon, with checks south of Rollot and a repelled raid near Chemin-des-Bamnes. In London reports, German artillery actions increased near Morlancourt and Kemmel.
Baton Rouge May 15 Gov Pleasant sent his final message to the legislature advocating national prohibition and woman suffrage. He urges ratification of the federal prohibition amendment and calls for tax system reform to reduce maximum parish levies. He also seeks higher public school funding and higher teacher salaries to meet living costs and prevent loss of teachers.
Baton Rouge May 14 The gubernatorial message and four major measures accelerate the session. Senator Leon Haas introduces a constitutional amendment removing the word male from suffrage. House actions include the primary election law bill and vagrancy bill progress. Auto license fee reform seeks a $12 000 annual appropriation with surplus considerations.
