Senators debate swift remedies for food gambling issues proposing harsh measures. A vocal faction calls for public shaming via lamp post hangings as the quickest deterrent, drawing praise from some conservatives and condemnation from others.
Chicago traders faced a two day halt as the Board of Trade ordered all trading in wheat and futures suspended except closing out existing contracts. Corn and oats were discontinued and May wheat was eliminated from Saturday’s activity while lawmakers debate an espionage bill and food speculation limits. The Senate pressed to restore press censorship as part of the war measures.
Little Rock Arkansas May 14 The last batch of 2465 men rafts to Port Logan Roots of training camp arrives as Oklahoma troops not in the original territory join. About 500 will be rejected for disability and the camp will start with about 500 staff and men. Colonel Robert L Bullard commands the post.
In Washington on May 14 the forthcoming wedding of Miss Nona McAdoo and Ferdinand de Mohrensschildt, second secretary of the Russian embassy, is set for tomorrow at St. John's Church. A reception will follow at the home of Miss McAdoo's father and stepmother, Secretary of the Treasury and Mrs. William G. McAdoo.
Fire on the torpedo boat destroyer Roe in dry dock at the Brooklyn navy yard burned for an hour Saturday before being extinguished by four Brooklyn fire companies. Marines and bluejackets had attempted to fight the blaze with no details on the damage or its cause.
The Natural Gas Association of America holds its annual convention in Buffalo starting today and will continue through most of the week. Delegates attend from Ohio West Virginia Indiana Kansas Oklahoma and other states.
Denver residents head to the polls for the municipal election with several charter amendment proposals on the ballot and to choose a city auditor and nine councilmen under the nonpartisan plan. The closing campaign was one of the most spirited in years.
Caldwell Parish district court, in Columbia Louisiana, adjourned to the first Monday of July after a busy session. Foster Long pleaded guilty to beating his wife and burning her body, and was sentenced to two years in the penitentiary. E B George paid a fifty dollar fish law fine. J C Shelton, bootlegger, kept in jail after refusing plea and facing trial. He and a man named Bill Jones are charged with stealing clothing valued at forty to fifty dollars.
Secretary Maddo will tour western cities to bolster Liberty Loan fundraising efforts. The campaign aims to strengthen war finances through public support and participation in the loan drives.
Secretary McAdoo will tour the Midwest from Chicago to Denver starting May 17 to urge strong Liberty Loan subscriptions. He stresses the war is finish-or-die against autocracy and urges oversubscription to show American resolve, noting the $2 billion goal must be met and exceeded.

In London on May 14 the First Lord of Admiralty Carson announced in the house of commons the formation of the naval staff with Admiral Jellicoe as the first sea lord and chief.
The admiralty reports that naval forces destroyed the airship L-22 in the North Sea this morning near London.
Gran tar Beechica Wilson has authorized expanding the regular army to full war strength as planned in the administration army bill. Organization of new regiments will start tomorrow. About 65,000 of the 183,000 men to be added have already been recruited.
The Salt Water Natatorium at Monroe’s summer resort opens to the public Tuesday night with a large crowd expected. The Monroe band led by Lieut Bonis will perform as city authorities provide a festive evening and extra street cars will run during peak hours.
A bank robbery at the Fire National Bank of Shennen Castle near Pittsburg ends with one bandit and three others killed after a posse member shoots the bandits. The cashier and two bandits were wounded in the raid by three bandits.
Allied nations face growing concern over the Russian political crisis in Petrograd as ministers threaten resignations while British forces press Germans along the French front. Reports deny a soldiers armistice while Russia debates unity and fraternization with the enemy. The British push toward the Drocourt Queant line as Zee Brugge and Wilhelmshaven shelters come under assault. Italian forces bombard the Tsonzo front in large-scale offensives.
Most members of the British and French war chestons have returned to Washington after visits. The report notes a general reshuffling of personnel and ongoing coordination with U S officials.
