A massive blaze in Rimouski Quebec raged over 30 hours destroying 360 houses, a hospital, theater, two hotels, and the county courthouse. Snow eased the effort as 2,000 residents fled, with fears initially of fatalities later disproved by Red Cross checks.
Royal navy divers claim to have located a 16th century Spanish galleon off Tobermary Scotland amid legends of a hold containing about 68 million dollars in gold ducats. Lt Cmdr Reay Parkinson led the treasure hunt and says evidence points to the Duque Florencia from 1588. admiralty remains cautious but notes a live possibility. The ship, tied to the 11th Duke of Argyll, may hold treasure rights granted by Charles I.
A 300 horsepower motor burned out on the Ouachita river cutting power to Monroe for an hour and five minutes. Commissioner Frank X. Cline said the motor halted the plant cooling and water from an alternate source was used for cooling during the outage. Power returned first to hospitals and downtown, with residences restored by 11 40 a.m.
In Richland Parish Louisiana a 65 year old tenant farmer B P Traxler was found shot to death in a cotton field close to his home four miles northeast of Bee Bayou. Coroner Dr J C Ellington says the 12 gauge shotgun wound to the head was self inflicted and Traxler died instantly. His wife found the body after returning from church. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at Bethel Baptist Church near Rayville with Rev J S Deal and Rev J W Dearman officiating. Interment will be at Forest Cemetery under Mulhearn Funeral Home. He leaves a wife three sons Burley Bill and Thurman and three daughters Mrs Tom Fife Mrs John Jackson and two brothers and two sisters.
West Monroe cab driver Curtis Anderson, 26, leaped from the old traffic bridge into the river after a dare and was swept downstream. Fire crews searched nearly two miles below the bridge and near Lazarre's Point as rescuers, including Campbell and Tannehill, faced cramps and exhaustion in the effort to recover his body.

Ben Cameron 40 was taken to parish jail for examination by the parish coroner. police used tear gas shells, broke down the door and cuffed Cameron wearing underwear and holding a shotgun.
Winnipeg Manitoba May 8 troops and civilian volunteers push to shore up sagging levees as flood crests loom from North Dakota and Minnesota. Silt churns through streets paralyzing transport while 1,500 residents near low-lying areas are told to flee. About 4,400 evacuees from homes hospitals and the city jail plus 4,000 in Canadian towns along a 60 mile stretch have already fled. Brig Morton warns water could reach 23 feet over damaged dikes threatening Norwood and east Kildonan suburbs.

A 43 year old farmer Q B Graham was killed instantly when the car he rode in overturned on a gravel road four miles southwest of Mangham La around 1 am Sunday Driver J F Mc Daniels of Crowville is jailed on drunk driving charges Coroner Dr J C Ellington said Graham died of a broken neck Another passenger Truman Graham was treated for a scalp laceration and released Funeral services were held at Lone Cherry Baptist Church with Rev Huey Latham officiating Interment followed at Lone Cherry Church Cemetery Pallbearers were Harvey Tillman Emmett Landrum M M Valentine Jesse Bell W M Heath and John White.
Baton Rouge May 8 AP The Louisiana legislature opened with a $100 million highway bond proposal to fund a Mississippi River bridge in New Orleans and other measures. Gov Earl Long will address a statewide broadcast Monday. Rep Edwin Hunter seeks a constitutional amendment requiring voter approval for future taxes.
Pampa Tex May 8 Ben H Guill a 40 year old Pampa broker won a special election as the only Republican in a field of 11 and will serve until Jan 3 1941 succeeding Rep Gene Worley who became a federal judge Guill defeated the nearest rival by 1887 votes and about 22 percent of the total 35847 votes cast He urged a broader two party system in Texas and plans to run for a full term in November with potential Democratic challenger Mrs Altavene Clark Amarillo already signaling another bid in July.
A spring gale ignited a million-dollar blaze on Jamaica Bay four mile rail trestle, damaging a 2 500 foot gap. The Long Island Rail Road main link between Queens and Rockaway sections suffered extensive damage, with damage estimated at 1 250 000. Firefighters faced water and access challenges as engines were confined to ends of the span. Emergency schedules were issued until restoration.
An 18 year old Wisner high student Allen Linfield Campbell drowned in a pond two miles east of Wisner on the Hope Estate. Coroner Dr L F Robinson ruled accidental drowning after Campbell and companions swam in ten feet deep water. Rescue efforts failed but body was recovered before noon. Funeral arrangements set at First National Funeral Home Winnsboro with services by Rev Tom Ratcliff and interment in Central Cemetery. Survivors include parents Mr and Mrs J H Campbell three brothers and three sisters.
