May 6 Washington saw a renewed Senate floor clash over the internal revenue bureau inquiry and Secretary Mellon. Senator Watson, Republican Indiana, said he has no plan to press the resolution to end the investigation while Senator Jones, Democrat New Mexico, seeks authorization for special counsel and agents. Senator Weaison stated he would not move to close hearings amid prior criticism of the probe as personal controversy involving Senator Couzens and Mellon.
El Paso City National Bank, a large Southwest institution, failed to open today due to weakness from frozen paper. The bank had been saved three months earlier when $1,000,000 in gold was moved from the Federal Reserve Bank vaults. A crowd gathered outside but there was no disorder.
Baton Rouge May 6 The inaugural ball for Henry L Fuqua's Louisiana governorship on May 19 will be staged in a large tent on the LSU campus The tent covers 14000 square feet with 1000 spectator seats along one side using athletic field bleachers and the opposite side left open.
Maryland Republicans gave Calvin Coolidge a solid delegation at the Cleveland convention after a near-blank primary in which only about ten percent voted. The result favored Coolidge by roughly 12 to 1, with Frederick N. Zihlman likely renominated in the sixth district and other Maryland House members re-nominated.
Baton Rouge May 6. Lawmakers gather for the coming session to choose a speaker. Stuart Douglas of Caddo is a leading candidate with rumored tacit support from Governor elect Henry Fuqua. Anti Klan candidate T Sambda Jones and Jules Carville of Iberville also feature in the talks.
Baton Rouge readies for a three day spring exposition opening tomorrow. The event includes an industrial show in the community club a flower show in a large tent and an automobile show in another tent. Governor Parker will open at 2 30 p m with a flower parade under Anti Tuberculosis auspices. L S A Cadet band Ahmar Grotto and Stanocolar Refinery band will perform throughout.
The M. E. Church South in DeRidder Louisiana passed resolutions protesting an inaugural ball for Governor elect Fuqua. It urged him to discourage the event calling it a slap at Christianity. The church cites that many in the electing majority belong to churches discouraging modern dancing.
Indiana's statewide primary election is in progress with voters balloting for a wide field of candidates as Hoosier politicians exercise their noted talents in Indianapolis today May 6.
Celia Cooney and husband Edward Cooney were sentenced to 10 to 20 years each by County Judge Martin in Brooklyn for assault and robbery. Celia to Auburn prison, Edward to Sing Sing, after ten holdups and a fatal shot at a National Biscuit Co warehouse. The couple fled to Florida where their baby died.
William R. Harvey, allied with M. T. Gonzaullas, testified in Mobile federal court about graft connected to bootleg operations and police raids. He described payments from bootleggers and said raids targeted certain others, while denying involvement in specific schemes.
Agnes Adlan Petit wife of Clement M Petit and former daughter in law of Milwaukee salt king filed suit in New York seeking separation from her husband and alleging alienation of affection against her ex-father in law.
The twelfth annual Chamber of Commerce meeting opened with talks on mass district buying, chain stores, and anti trust concerns. Edward Filene urged department and other stores to form chains to cut distribution costs and meet chain competition, arguing mass distribution will lower retail prices while preserving quality. He warned small stores risk being supplanted unless they join chains with local managers owning profits.
In Oriente Province about 250 rebels oppose the Zayas government with a 150 man group near Baire and a 100 man force around Yateras. Additional small bands operate in Havana Province, with observers noting some rebels surrender to return home in Santa Clara.

New Orleans May 6 with three and a half days left before the Amite scaffold the six condemned men face execution for the killing of Dallas Calmes Independence Louisiana. Five will know last appeal result as the deadline nears.
Cy Williams, centerfielder for the Philadelphia Nationals, belted two homers against New York today. The first came in the second inning and the second in the sixth, the latter driving in a run. Williams now has five home runs this season.
